1) What is a Sargent 6300 large format interchangeable core, and do I get a cylinder housing with it?
The 6300 is the keyed core only, the removable figure-eight plug that carries the pins and the keyway. It drops into large format interchangeable core housings, so you are buying the keying element, not a mortise or rim cylinder body or the lock itself. Property managers rekeying a building buy these by the box and swap them without pulling any lock apart.
2) Do I need a special key to pull a Sargent 6300 core out of the lock?
Yes, and it is not included. Core removal and installation on the 6300 uses control key 6272CTL, which is ordered separately. If you are setting up a new interchangeable core program, order at least one control key with the first batch of cores, otherwise you will have cores you cannot install.
3) Which Sargent keyways can I get the 6300 core in?
Twenty-two keyways across three families: HA, HB, HC, HE, HF and HK; LA, LB, LC, LE, LF, LG, LJ, LK and LL; and RA, RB, RC, RE, RG, RJ and RK. The keyway has to match the keys already cut for your system, so pull an existing key and read the stamp before ordering. Get this wrong and the core seats fine but your keys will not enter.
4) How do I order Sargent 6300 cores so they all work on one key for a building?
Choose KA, keyed alike, and every core in the order is cut to the same key. Keyed different (KD) gives each core its own key, and standard keying is the third option. Master keying is a separate yes/no choice on the order, so a maintenance master over individually keyed tenant doors is specified by selecting KD plus master keying. Keep the keyway the same across the order or the master will not cross the group.
5) What finishes does the Sargent 6300 core come in, and does the core finish need to match my lever?
Three: 04 satin brass clear coated, 15 satin nickel plated clear coated, and BSP black suede powder coat. Only the core face shows once it is installed, so match it to the surrounding trim, 15 against satin chrome or nickel hardware, 04 against brass, BSP against black openings. A mismatch is cosmetic, not functional.
6) Should I use interchangeable cores or standard fixed cylinders for a building I have to rekey often?
Interchangeable cores like the 6300 are the answer when turnover drives your rekeying. Pull the old core with the control key, drop a new one in, done in seconds per door with no disassembly and no locksmith on site for each opening. Fixed conventional cylinders are cheaper per opening but have to be pinned or replaced individually, which is fine for a building that rarely changes hands and painful for multi-tenant residential or student housing.
