1) Does the Sargent 8966 exit device come with the outside lever trim, or do I order that separately?
The 8966 is the less trim version, so the outside lever or pull has to be ordered as a separate item. The device itself is the classroom function mortise exit device with the push rail; what you add on the outside determines how people get back in. Plan the trim and cylinder into the same order so the opening is complete on install day.
2) Is the Sargent 8966 handed, and which hand do I order?
Handing matters on this one. The 8966 is built LHR (left hand reverse) or RHR (right hand reverse), which is how exit devices are handed since they always swing out of the space being egressed. Stand outside the room, look at the door as it swings toward you: hinges on your right is RHR, hinges on your left is LHR. Order the wrong hand and the mortise lock latch and trim will not line up.
3) Will a wide stile mortise exit device like the Sargent 8900 work on an aluminum storefront door?
No. Wide stile devices need the stile depth to take a mortise lock body, and typical narrow stile aluminum storefront doors do not have it. For a narrow stile aluminum leaf, look at the Adams Rite 8400 Series narrow stile mortise exit device for aluminum doors, or the Von Duprin 5575 narrow stile crossbar mortise device. The 8966 belongs on wide stile hollow metal or wood leaves.
4) What does the classroom function do on the Sargent 8966 mortise exit device?
Classroom function means egress from the inside is always free through the push rail, while the outside lever is locked or unlocked by key. Staff can secure the door from the corridor side without anyone inside ever being trapped, which is what school lockdown procedures call for. It is the same function set the Corbin Russwin ED5600AL accepts through classroom lever trim, the difference being that Sargent builds the classroom function into the 8966 ordering code.
5) I need a fire rated mortise exit device for a labeled classroom door. Is this the right one?
Fire rating is not something to assume on an exit device order, and for a labeled opening you want the rating stated on the model you buy. Two wide stile mortise devices we carry are documented fire rated: the Adams Rite 3300 Series fire rated mortise device for wood and hollow metal doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED5600AL, rated 3 hour. Note that the Adams Rite 8300 and 8400, the Von Duprin 8875, 9475/9575 and 9875 are all life safety, non fire rated devices, so they do not belong on a labeled leaf.
6) My classroom doors are wood. Which wide stile mortise exit devices can I actually use?
Door substrate rules out several options fast. The Von Duprin 8875 and 9875, and the Detex 30 Series Advantex, are all documented as not wood door compatible, so on a wood leaf they are out. The Adams Rite 3300 and 8300 Series are both listed for wood and hollow metal doors. Confirm the leaf material before you pick the device, because reinforcing a wood door for a mortise pocket is a different job than prepping hollow metal.
7) Is the Sargent 8900 Series exit device Grade 1?
Grade 1, and Sargent states the 8900 Series exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 cycle and strength testing. That is the level most school and institutional specs call out for corridor and exterior openings. Its wide stile peers at the same grade include the Von Duprin 9875, the Falcon 25-M and the Corbin Russwin ED5600AL.
8) Should I use a mortise exit device or a rim device on a classroom door?
A mortise exit device puts the lock body inside the door edge, so the latch is protected and the door edge is reinforced, but the leaf has to be prepped for a mortise pocket. That is why the 8900 is specified on new hollow metal and wood wide stile openings where the prep can be done. A rim device surface mounts and is the easier retrofit on a door already cut for something else. If the classroom leaf is already mortise prepped, the 8966 drops into that prep logic; if it is not, a rim device saves you the machining.
9) I only need a push-to-exit device with no outside access at all. Is the 8966 overkill?
If nobody needs to come back in through that door, yes, classroom function is more device than you need. Exit only models cover that: the Falcon 25-M-EO in a 36 inch wide stile, the BEST Precision 2301 Series exit only with heavy wrought construction, or the Detex 30 Series Advantex device only. Keep the 8966 for openings where a key has to lock and unlock the outside lever, which is the point of the classroom function.
10) Is the Sargent 8966 field reversible, or do I have to order the correct hand?
Order it to hand. The 8966 is built as LHR or RHR, unlike some crossbar devices such as the Von Duprin 8875 and 9875, which are catalogued as non-handed, or the Von Duprin 5575, listed as field reversible. If you are stocking spares for a campus with doors swinging both ways, that difference matters: with the Sargent you carry both hands.
11) Can I standardize a whole school on the Sargent 8900 Series across different door widths?
That is what the range is built for. One series, one function, one finish, across 32, 36, 42 and 48 inch rails and both hands, so corridor, classroom and office leaves of different widths all get the same device, the same push rail feel and the same key routine for staff. The modular construction means field replaceable parts, so your maintenance shop stocks components rather than whole devices. The only width caveat is the AL alarmed option, which needs a 36 inch minimum door.

Twelve finishes are offered: 03 bright brass, 04 satin brass, 09 bright bronze, 10 satin bronze, 10B dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, 10BE, 10BL, 20D dark statuary bronze lacquered, 32 bright stainless, 32D satin stainless, plus BSP black suede powder coat and WSP white suede powder coat. For schools, 32D satin stainless is the usual standard because it hides wear on high traffic corridor doors, and the BSP and WSP powder coats are the ones to use when the device has to disappear into a painted door.
14) What is the difference between a push pad device like the Sargent 8966 and a crossbar mortise device?
The Sargent 8966 is a wide stile mortise device in the 8900 Series with a push rail. The Von Duprin 8875 is a wide stile crossbar mortise device and the Von Duprin 5575 is a narrow stile crossbar mortise device, both Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Von Duprin 9475/9575 Impact Series uses a recessed push pad on wide stile doors. All are mortise lock exit devices; the actuator style and the resulting door face appearance differ.
