Sargent & Greenleaf Black Spy Proof Ring for D112

The key locking convertible dials do not require the door to be counterbored prior to installation. Therefore, they can be easily installed in the field. Dials are equipped with single spline 5/16"" - 40 spindles. A spindle is pressed into a dial with its spline keyway aligned to either 41 or 50 on the dial, as indicated in the table. The #41 splining location is required to ensure full lock bolt extension when key-locking dials are locked down with zero under the opening index. Dial spindles will accommodate a maximum door thickness of 3.4 inches. Thicker doors require a special order dial. Dial rings are shipped with dial ring bearings and necessary mounting hardware for standard installation.

Sargent & Greenleaf R162-002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Sargent & Greenleaf spy proof dial ring for the D112 come with the mounting hardware, or do I need to order that separately?
The ring ships with its dial ring bearings and the mounting hardware needed for a standard installation. What it does not include is the dial itself. The D112 dial is a separate part, so if you are replacing a damaged ring on an existing safe you are covered, but a full dial-and-ring change means ordering the dial too.
2) How thick a safe door will the S&G dial spindle handle?
Up to 3.4 inches of door thickness with the standard spindle. Anything thicker than that needs a special order dial, so measure the door from the outside face to the back of the lock case before you commit. Most container and gun safe doors fall well inside that range.
3) Do I have to counterbore the safe door to install a key locking convertible S&G dial and ring?
No. The key locking convertible dials are built so the door does not need to be counterbored first, which is why these go in as a field installation rather than a shop job. That matters on an in-service safe where you cannot pull the door for machining.
4) What spindle thread does the S&G dial use, and does the splining position matter?
Single spline 5/16 inch - 40 spindles. The spline keyway gets aligned to either 41 or 50 on the dial depending on the application. Use the #41 location on key locking dials: that is what guarantees full lock bolt extension when the dial is locked down with zero under the opening index. Spline it at 50 on a key locking dial and the bolt may not throw all the way.
5) Is this spy proof ring handed? I need to know before I order for a left hinged safe door.
It is non-handed. The same black spy proof ring works regardless of which way the safe door swings, so there is no left or right version to specify.
6) What does a spy proof ring actually do on a safe dial?
It shrouds the dial graduations so the combination can only be read from directly in front of the safe, cutting off the angle someone would use to watch a dial-off from the side or over a shoulder. It is a mechanical lock accessory, not an electronic one, and on the D112 it is the black finish ring that carries the reading index.
7) What finish does the S&G R Series spy proof ring for the D112 come in?
Black, and that is the only finish offered for this R Series ring. If you are standardizing dial hardware across a row of safes or a vault line, every unit will match without having to sort finishes at install.
