Sargent & Greenleaf D220-228 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Sargent & Greenleaf D Series spy-proof dial work on a 3 inch thick safe door?
Yes. The OBB spy-proof conventional dial is rated to a maximum door thickness of 3 inches, and the dial and ring combination covers doors up to 3.406 inches maximum. If your safe door is thicker than that, this dial and spindle length won't reach the lock body and you need a longer spindle setup.
2) What safe locks does the S&G OBB spy-proof dial fit?
It's built for Group 2 and Group 2M safe locks. Those are the standard mechanical combination locks on commercial safes and gun safes, so if your existing lock body is a Group 2 or 2M mechanical unit, this dial mates to it. It is not a dial for an electronic lock.
3) Can I use this dial to replace a worn dial on an existing S&G mechanical safe lock?
That is what it's for. As long as the lock is a Group 2 or 2M mechanical unit, the door is no more than 3 inches thick, and your spindle is splined on 41, the D Series spy-proof conventional dial goes on in place of the old one. Changing the dial does not change the combination, which stays set in the lock body.
4) What does splined on 41 mean when ordering a safe dial?
The spline is the drive detail where the dial engages the spindle, and this dial is splined on 41. Splining determines how the dial indexes onto the spindle, so the replacement dial has to match the spline count of the spindle already in your door. Order the spline to match, not just the dial style.
5) What is the difference between a spy-proof safe dial and a standard open-reading dial?
A spy-proof dial shields the index so the numbers can only be read from directly in front of the dial, which stops someone standing off to the side from watching the combination being dialed. A standard open-reading dial shows the graduations to anyone in the room. If the safe sits where a customer or the public can see the operator work it, the spy-proof style is the one to specify.
6) Is the S&G safe dial sold with the dial ring or just the dial?
The orderable item is the dial in the OBB spy-proof conventional configuration, part YBLED60/PCT. Confirm the dial ring you already have is the matching conventional pattern, because the ring carries the index mark the dial is read against and a mismatched ring will not index correctly.
