1) What is the difference between the Sargent & Greenleaf 951 and 951C padlock?
Same lock, different cylinder access. The 951 ships with a restricted keyway cylinder that Sargent & Greenleaf supplies only to authorized government agencies. The 951C carries a non-restricted cylinder with all the same barrier materials, shrouded shackle, and cast stainless steel body, so a commercial buyer who can't get on a restricted keyway orders the 951C. If you're a contractor, property manager, or private security integrator, the C is the one you can actually key and service.
2) Will a 5/8 inch hasp or chain link fit through the Sargent & Greenleaf 951 padlock shackle?
The shrouded shackle gives 13/16 inch of clearance with a 1/2 inch diameter shackle, so a hasp staple or chain link up to about 13/16 inch through the opening will pass. The shroud is what limits you, not the shackle itself: this is a shielded design meant to leave almost nothing exposed for a bolt cutter or pry bar, so anything thicker than that clearance simply won't seat. Measure the staple on your hasp before ordering, because a shrouded padlock has no room to force it.
3) Does the Sargent & Greenleaf 951 padlock meet MIL-DTL-43607J?

That's the high security shrouded padlock spec, and it's why the body and shackle use barrier materials that resist cutting, drilling, and sawing rather than plain hardened steel. 4) What kind of cylinder is in the Sargent & Greenleaf 951 padlock, and can I key it to my existing system?
It uses a high security Medeco key cylinder. That matters if you already run Medeco elsewhere on the property, because it means the padlock lives in the same family of key control as your door cylinders rather than being a standalone key on the ring. On the 951 the keyway is restricted to authorized government agencies; the 951C uses a non-restricted cylinder, which is the route for a commercial or institutional key system.
5) How wide is the Sargent & Greenleaf 951 padlock body, and will it clear a recessed hasp?
The lock body is 2-3/4 inches wide and rectangular with a shroud around the shackle, so it needs real clearance on both sides of the hasp staple. On a recessed hasp, a container locking bar, or a gate with a close-fitting keeper, check that you have more than 2-3/4 inches of open room at the staple before you commit. 8) Is a shrouded padlock worth it over a standard hardened shackle padlock for a perimeter gate?
Depends on what you're defending against. A standard padlock leaves the shackle exposed, which is where a bolt cutter or a pry bar goes first. The 951 shields the shackle inside the body and only leaves 13/16 inch of clear opening, so there's very little to grab. It also uses barrier materials in the body and shackle against cutting, drilling, and sawing, which a plain hardened shackle lock does not. The tradeoff is fit: 13/16 inch of clearance and a 2-3/4 inch wide body rule out plenty of existing hasps and chains. For a storage cabinet or an interior door where the threat is casual, a conventional keyed padlock is the easier fit. For perimeter security, containers, and anything on a government spec, the shrouded design is the point.
9) Will the Sargent & Greenleaf 951 padlock corrode outdoors on a gate or yard?
