Satco Lighting S11656 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Satco S11656 T5 LED tube be installed without removing the fluorescent ballast?
No. The S11656 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed or disconnected and line voltage wired straight to the sockets. It uses double ended wiring, meaning line goes to one end and neutral to the other. Leaving a ballast in the circuit will damage the lamp.
2) Will a 4 foot T5 LED tube with a G5 miniature bi-pin base drop into my existing T5 fluorescent fixture?
The lamp uses the same miniature bi-pin (G5) base as a standard 4 foot T5 fluorescent, so it seats in the same lampholders. The sockets themselves have to be rewired for direct line voltage first, since this is a ballast bypass lamp. Mechanically it fits; electrically the fixture has to be converted.
3) How do I set the color temperature on the Satco S11656 CCT selectable T5 LED?
The lamp is field selectable across five color temperatures: 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K and 6500K. You pick the setting on the lamp itself, so one stocked item covers warm office work, neutral corridors and cool shop or garage spaces. Output shifts with the setting: 3000L, 3450L, 3500L, 3600L and 3400L respectively.
4) Can I use this T5 LED tube in a closed wraparound or vaportight fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed and gasketed fixtures are allowed. It also carries a damp location rating and is listed for indoor use, which covers covered walkways, parking garages, locker rooms and bathrooms. It is not a wet location lamp, so do not put it anywhere exposed to direct water.
5) How much light does a 25W T5 LED tube put out compared to what I am replacing?
Output runs 3000 to 3600 lumens depending on which color temperature you select, and Satco rates it as a 100W incandescent equivalent. CRI is 82, which is fine for corridors, storage, parking structures and general commercial space but below what you would want for color matching work. Beam spread is 160 degrees, so it throws wide rather than spotting.
6) Will this T5 LED tube dim on my existing dimmer or 3-way switch?
No. The 25W CCT selectable T5 LED is not a three-way lamp and there is no dimming control in its wiring scheme. It runs direct off line voltage after the ballast is bypassed, so plan on straight on/off switching or occupancy sensing rather than a dimmer.
7) Should I buy a Type B ballast bypass T5 or a plug and play Type A tube?
Type B, like this Satco 25W T5, means rewiring the fixture once and then never dealing with a ballast again, which is the lower long-run maintenance path on a large building. The tradeoff is an electrician at every fixture on day one, and the fixture is permanently converted. A Type A plug-and-play lamp goes in with no rewire but stays dependent on the existing ballast and fails with it. If your ballasts are already at end of life, Type B is the one that makes sense.
8) What does the tube itself look like installed, and is the lens diffused?
White housing with a frosted glass lens, so you get a diffused glow rather than visible diodes. The base is plastic. In an open strip or a cove where the lamp is in view, the frost keeps the glare down.
