Satco Lighting S11655 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the SATCO S11655 T5 LED tube run on my existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
The S11655 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the ballast has to come out and line voltage goes straight to the sockets. It will not operate on an existing T5 fluorescent ballast. It accepts either single ended or double ended wiring, which is what makes it work in most retrofits without changing tombstones, and it runs anywhere from 120 to 277 volts at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp covers both a 120V office and a 277V commercial panel.
2) Will this 4 foot T5 LED fit my existing T5 fluorescent sockets?
It uses a G5 miniature bi-pin base, the same base as a standard 4 foot T5 fluorescent lamp, in a T5 tube shape. Physically it drops into T5 lampholders. The catch is electrical, not mechanical: this is a ballast bypass lamp, so the fixture has to be rewired to line voltage before the lamp goes in.
3) What color temperatures does the SATCO S11655 T5 LED give me, and do I pick before ordering?
Color temperature is selected on the lamp, not at order time. One part number covers 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K and 6500K. For a building where corridors, offices and back-of-house all want different color, that means stocking one lamp instead of five. Output shifts with the setting: 3000L at 3000K, 3450L at 3500K, 3500L at 4000K, 3600L at 5000K and 3400L at 6500K, all at 25 watts.
4) Is a 25W T5 LED bright enough to replace the 54W T5HO lamps in my shop, or should I look at something else?
Judge it on lumens, not wattage. The S11655 delivers 3000 to 3600 lumens depending on the color setting, which SATCO rates as a 100W incandescent equivalent. That is in the range of a standard 4 foot T5 lamp, not a high output T5HO. If your fixture is running T5HO for high bay or shop light levels, a straight lamp swap here will drop your light levels, and you want a high output T5 LED instead.
5) Can I use this T5 LED tube in an enclosed or gasketed fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a closed lens wrap, vapor tight or gasketed strip is fair game. Location rating is damp, and it is an indoor lamp, so a covered parking deck, a laundry room or a walk-in cooler vestibule are fine. A wet location, exposed to direct water, is not.
6) Does the SATCO S11655 qualify for utility rebates or California Title 24?
It is DLC approved and Title 24 compliant, which are the two boxes most commercial rebate programs and California energy code jobs check. It is also FCC compliant. For a rebate submission, cite the DLC listing against SATCO part number S11655.
7) Will this T5 LED work on my dimmer or a three-way switch?
No. The S11655 is not a three-way lamp, and as a Type B ballast bypass lamp it is wired to line voltage at the socket. Put it on a standard on/off switched circuit. If the space needs dimming, this is the wrong lamp and you want a dimmable driver-based fixture or a lamp specifically listed as dimmable.
8) Is the color quality good enough for a retail or office space?
CRI is 82, which is the normal commercial range for offices, corridors, back of house and general retail. For a jewelry case, a paint department or anywhere color matching decides a sale, 90+ CRI is the spec to hold out for. With the 3000K setting, 82 CRI reads warm and acceptable in a lobby or hospitality corridor.
9) How long before I am back up the ladder relamping these?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. On a 12 hour a day, 5 day a week schedule that is roughly 16 years of service; running 24/7 it is about 5.7 years. For a property manager budgeting relamp labor across a building, that is the number that justifies the rewire on a Type B conversion, since the ballast bypass work is done once and the ballast never fails again.
10) What is the S11655 lamp body made of, and does it break like a glass fluorescent tube?
The lens is glass with a frost finish and the base is plastic. It is not a shatter-resistant coated lamp, so for a food prep area, a school gym or anywhere NSF or a glass-breakage policy applies, specify a coated or plastic-lensed tube instead.
