Satco Lighting S11909 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to remove the existing fluorescent ballast to use the Satco S11909 T5 LED tube?
Yes. The S11909 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp and needs no ballast or external driver, so the existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage run to the sockets. It is wired double ended, meaning line goes to one end and neutral to the other. Leave the ballast in place and the lamp will not operate correctly.
2) Can I run these Satco T5 LED tubes on 277 volt commercial circuits?
Yes. The S11909 accepts 120 to 277 volts at 50/60 Hz, drawing 0.058 to 0.025 amps depending on supply voltage, so the same lamp works on 120V residential branch circuits and 277V commercial lighting circuits.
3) Is this 6500K T5 LED going to match the other tubes in my building?
At 6500K this is a cool daylight white, the bluest end of the white range, with 82 CRI. It will not match 3500K or 4000K lamps in adjacent fixtures, and the color is fixed, not CCT selectable. If your other openings are running neutral or warm white tubes, order the matching color temperature instead of mixing.
4) Can I put this on a dimmer switch?
No. The S11909 is non-dimmable. Wired to a dimmer it can flicker, buzz, or fail early. Use a standard line voltage switch, and if the space needs dimming you will need a dimmable lamp and compatible control.
5) Is this T5 LED tube OK in an enclosed or damp location fixture?
Enclosed rated, so it can go in a closed or gasketed fixture without voiding the lamp rating, and it carries a damp location rating. That covers covered exterior soffits, parking garages, and bathrooms. It is not rated wet, so do not use it where it will see direct water.
6) How much light do I get compared with the fluorescent tube I am taking out?
700 lumens from 7 watts, rated as a 50W incandescent equivalent, with a 240 degree beam spread and a frosted lens to diffuse the output. In a strip or undercabinet fixture the wide spread spreads light much like the fluorescent it replaces rather than throwing a narrow beam.
7) Does this Satco T5 LED qualify for California Title 24 work?
Yes, the S11909 is listed as Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. Note that it is not DLC listed, so it will not satisfy utility rebate programs that require DLC qualification.
8) Does it matter which way up these tubes are installed in the fixture?
No. Burning position is universal, so the S11909 can be mounted base up, base down, horizontal, or at any angle. On double ended wiring, what does matter is getting line to the correct end socket.
9) How long before we are back up the ladder relamping these?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12 hour daily schedule that is roughly 11 years of service, which is why MRO buyers standardize on ballast bypass LED tubes in hard to reach strip fixtures.
10) Is the S11909 a glass tube or plastic?
Glass, both the tube body and the base material, with a frosted lens. It weighs 0.13 lb, so pack these with the care you would give a fluorescent lamp rather than treating them as shatterproof plastic.
