Satco Lighting S11908 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to remove the ballast to install the Satco S11908 T5 LED lamp?
Yes. The S11908 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp with double ended wiring, so the existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets, power at one end and neutral at the other. It needs no ballast or external driver. If you want a lamp that drops into an existing fixture without rewiring, this is not it, you want a Type A plug and play lamp instead.
2) Will a 7W T5 LED bulb work on a 277 volt circuit?
It runs on any line voltage from 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential panels and 277V commercial lighting circuits. Current draw runs 0.058A at the low end of the range to 0.025A at the high end, which matters when you are counting lamps on a branch circuit.
3) Can I put the Satco S11908 on a dimmer switch?
No. This 7W T5 LED is non dimmable and has no three way function. Put it on a dimming circuit and you risk flicker or early failure. Use a straight on/off switch, or specify a dimmable LED lamp if the room is on a dimmer.
4) Is this T5 LED lamp OK in an enclosed fixture or a damp bathroom?
It is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go in a closed or gasketed fixture where heat builds up. Location rating is damp, which covers bathrooms, covered walkways and similar spots, but not wet locations with direct water exposure. It can be burned in any orientation, horizontal, vertical or base up.
5) What fluorescent lamp does this 7 watt T5 LED replace?
It is a T5 shape on a miniature bi-pin base, the standard T5 socket, and Satco rates it at 50W incandescent equivalent output. It puts out 700 lumens at 7 watts. Check the existing lamp length in the fixture before ordering, since T5 tubes come in several lengths on the same base.
6) Will 4000K match the other bulbs in my building?
The S11908 is fixed at 4000K, a neutral white, with a CRI of 82. It is not a CCT selectable lamp, so there is no field switch to change it to 3000K or 5000K. If your other openings are on 3500K or 5000K lamps, this will read noticeably different side by side.
7) Does this Satco T5 LED meet California Title 24?
Yes, the S11908 is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. Note it is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify for utility rebate programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing.
8) How long does this Satco LED tube last compared to the fluorescent it replaces?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. For a property manager running lamps 12 hours a day that is roughly 11 years of service, which is the argument for absorbing the one time rewiring labor a Type B bypass conversion requires.
9) Does the S11908 spread light like a fluorescent tube or throw it in one direction?
Beam spread is 240 degrees with a frosted lens, so light wraps most of the way around the tube rather than firing in a single direction. That diffusion keeps diode hot spots from showing through in open strip fixtures and under cabinet channels.
