Satco Lighting S11905 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S11905 T5 LED need the existing fluorescent ballast, or does it have to be rewired?
The S11905 is a Type B lamp, so the ballast has to come out. It runs line voltage direct to the sockets, with no ballast or external driver required. The fixture must be rewired for double ended wiring, meaning line goes to one end and neutral to the other. If you leave a fluorescent ballast in the circuit, the lamp will not operate correctly.
2) Will the S11905 fit my existing T5 miniature bi-pin sockets?
It uses a miniature bi-pin base in a T5 tubular shape, which is the same lampholder as a standard T5 fluorescent. Mechanically it drops into those sockets. The catch is electrical, not physical: the fixture has to be rewired for ballast bypass first.
3) Can I put this LED tube on a dimmer?
No. The S11905 is not dimmable. Wire it to a straight on/off switch or a relay. Feeding it from an existing dimmed circuit can cause flicker or premature failure, so if the room is dimmed you need a different lamp.
4) Can this lamp go in an enclosed fixture or a damp location like a bathroom or covered walkway?
Enclosed rated, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is fine, and the location rating is Damp. That covers bathrooms, covered exterior soffits, and similar spots with moisture in the air. It is not rated for wet locations with direct water contact.
5) What voltage can I wire this 4W T5 LED lamp to?
Anything from 120V to 277V, at 50/60Hz, so it works on standard 120V residential circuits and on 277V commercial lighting branch circuits without a different part number. Current draw is 0.033A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.014A at the high end.
6) How much light does a 4 watt T5 LED actually put out, and what is it replacing?
400 lumens from 4 watts, rated as a 25W incandescent equivalent. Color is 4000K neutral white with a CRI of 82, and the beam spread is 240 degrees, so it throws light around most of the tube rather than in one direction. That output suits undercabinet, display case, cove, and sign applications rather than general room lighting.
7) Will the light look the same as the other 4000K tubes in my building?
Color is fixed at 4000K, not CCT selectable, so every S11905 you order comes out of the box at the same neutral white. For a property manager standardizing a building, that consistency is the point: there is no field switch to be set wrong by whoever changes the lamp. It will not match 3000K warm white or 5000K daylight fixtures.
8) Does this Satco T5 LED meet California Title 24?
Yes, the S11905 is Title 24 compliant, and it is FCC compliant for electromagnetic interference. It is not a DLC listed product, so if your utility rebate program requires a DLC qualified lamp, this one will not qualify for it.
9) Does the S11905 have to be mounted a certain way up?
Burning position is universal, so it can be installed base up, base down, horizontal, or at any angle without affecting rated life. That matters for cove and display case work where the tube often sits sideways or inverted.
10) How long before these T5 LED lamps need changing again?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. On a 12 hour a day retail or corridor schedule that is roughly 11 years of service, which is what makes the one-time ballast bypass rewire worth the labor across a lot of fixtures.
11) Is the tube clear or diffused?
Frosted. The S11905 is a lensed lamp with a frost finish, which spreads the diodes out so you do not see individual bright points through the tube. That is what you want in a display case or under a cabinet where the lamp is in the sight line.
