Satco Lighting S11954 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I drop the Satco S11954 5-foot LED T8 into my existing fluorescent fixture without touching the wiring?
No. The S11954 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. It will not run off a working fluorescent ballast. If you want a lamp that works with the ballast still in place, you need a Type A (plug-and-play) tube instead.
2) Can I use this LED tube in a parking garage or outdoors under a canopy?
The S11954 is rated for indoor use and for damp locations only. That covers a covered walkway, a cooler, or a shop with humidity, but not a wet location with direct water exposure. For exposed outdoor positions you need a wet-location-rated fixture and lamp.
3) Will this 22W LED tube dim on my existing dimmer or occupancy sensor dimming control?
No. The 22 watt S11954 is non-dimmable. Put it on a plain switched circuit. On a dimmer it can flicker or fail early, so if dimming is a requirement for the space, specify a dimmable tube instead.
4) Does the Satco S11954 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. It is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If the rebate is what is driving the retrofit, you need to select a DLC-listed tube.
5) Is this tube glass or plastic, and does that matter for a food or healthcare space?
The lens and base material are both glass with a frost finish and a white housing. Glass tubes handle heat well and will not yellow, but they break like a fluorescent lamp does. For food prep areas, gyms, or anywhere breakage is a concern, a shatter-resistant or plastic-bodied tube is the safer specification.
6) How long will these last before a maintenance crew has to go back up the ladder?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. Running 12 hours a day, that is roughly 11 years of service, which is why T8 LED retrofits get specified across whole buildings at once rather than lamp by lamp. Keep in mind the sockets are rewired for ballast bypass, so a future relamp has to use another Type B tube.
7) Does it matter which way the tube faces, or whether the fixture is mounted vertically?
Burning position is universal, so the lamp can be installed horizontally, vertically, or at an angle with no derating. The beam spread is 160 degrees, so aim the frosted lens side toward the space you are lighting rather than up into the housing.
