Satco Lighting S11956 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I drop the Satco S11956 T8 LED tube into my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
No. The S11956 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. Dropping it into a ballasted fixture will not work. If you want a no-rewire swap, you need a Type A (ballast-compatible) tube instead. Plan on a qualified electrician for the socket rewire.
2) Is the S11956 single-ended or does it fit standard G13 bi-pin tombstones?
The lamp uses a medium bi-pin (G13) base, the same pin spacing as a standard fluorescent T8, so it seats in existing tombstones. What changes with a ballast bypass lamp is the wiring behind those sockets, not the socket pattern itself.
3) Will this 30W LED tube work on a dimmer?
No. The S11956 is non-dimmable, so it has to be on a straight on/off switch or relay. Wiring it to a dimmer can cause flicker or shorten lamp life. For dimming-controlled areas, specify a dimmable tube or a dimmable LED fixture.
4) Does the Satco S11956 qualify for a utility rebate?
Not through DLC. The lamp is not DLC listed, and most commercial utility prescriptive rebates for linear LED require a DLC qualified product. It is Title 24 compliant, which matters for California projects, and it is FCC compliant for EMI. If the rebate program drives your spec, look for a DLC listed tube.
5) Does the Satco S11956 ballast bypass tube work on both 120V and 277V circuits?
It runs on any line voltage from 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp covers residential 120V and commercial 277V lighting branch circuits. Current draw is 0.250 to 0.108A depending on where in that voltage range you land.
6) Is 5000K at 4000 lumens bright enough to replace a 125W incandescent or a standard 32W fluorescent T8?
The tube puts out 4000 lumens at 30 watts, which Satco rates as a 125W incandescent equivalent. At 5000K it reads as crisp daylight white, the usual pick for shops, warehouses, parking garages and back-of-house areas rather than offices or lobbies where 3500K or 4000K is more common. Color temperature is fixed, not selectable, so every lamp in the building will match.
7) Can I use this T8 LED tube in a damp area like a parking garage or covered walkway?
It carries a damp location rating and is an indoor lamp. That covers enclosed areas with humidity or condensation, such as locker rooms, covered walkways and unconditioned storage. It is not for wet locations or direct exposure to weather. Burning position is universal, so you can mount it horizontally, vertically, or in a strip at any angle.
8) Is the S11956 a glass tube or plastic, and will it light the whole fixture evenly?
Glass, with a frosted glass lens and a white housing. The frost diffuses the diodes so you do not see hot spots through an open strip fixture, and the 160 degree beam spread gives near-full forward distribution, which suits wraps, troffers and strips. Glass construction means normal care in high-impact areas, like gyms or docks, where a coated or plastic tube is a better call.
9) How long before I am back on the ladder relamping these?
Rated average life is 50,000 hours. On a 12 hour daily schedule that is roughly 11 years of service, which is why the ballast removal labor on a Type B retrofit pays back over a fleet of fixtures. With 83 CRI the color rendering is typical general-purpose commercial quality.
