Satco Lighting S13122 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the SATCO S13122 70W LED corncob go straight into an existing metal halide fixture, or does the ballast have to come out?
The ballast has to come out. The S13122 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so it wires direct to line voltage at 100-277V, 50/60Hz. Leaving the existing HID ballast in circuit is not an option with this lamp. Plan on an electrician rewiring the socket to line voltage before the lamp goes in.
2) Will a mogul extended base LED lamp fit my standard mogul (E39) socket?
The S13122 uses a mogul extended base, which threads into a mogul socket but sits deeper in the fixture than a standard mogul lamp. Check that the fixture has the depth for it, particularly in shallow wallpacks and low-bay reflectors. In a tall shoebox or high bay, the extended base is usually what gets the light body clear of the socket housing.
3) What HID wattage does a 70W LED corncob actually replace?
At 10,500 lumens the S13122 lands in the range of a 250W to 400W metal halide or high pressure sodium lamp once you account for a HID lamp's lumen depreciation. SATCO rates it as a 250W incandescent equivalent. For a parking garage, warehouse aisle, or canopy running 250W MH today, this is a like for like swap on light output at 70W of draw.
4) Can I use this LED corncob in an enclosed fixture like an acorn or a wallpack?
Yes. The S13122 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go in a sealed globe, acorn, or gasketed wallpack without voiding the lamp rating. That is the one spec that separates it from most cheap corncobs, which fail early when heat cannot escape the fixture.
5) Is this SATCO corncob rated for outdoor use in an open fixture?
Damp location only. The S13122 is fine under a covered canopy, in a parking garage, or inside a gasketed outdoor fixture, but it is not a wet location lamp, so do not put it in an open bottom fixture where rain reaches the lamp directly. In a sealed wet rated housing, the housing does the protecting and the damp rating is not a barrier.
6) Can the SATCO S13122 be mounted base up, base down, or horizontal?
Any orientation. Burning position is universal, so it works base up in a high bay, base down in a post top, and horizontal in a wallpack. The corncob shape puts out a 360 degree beam, so it fills a fixture the way an HID arc tube did rather than throwing light in one direction.
7) Will 5000K match the lamps already in my other fixtures?
Only if those are 5000K. The S13122 is fixed at 5000K daylight white with 80+ CRI, and it is not CCT selectable, so there is no field switch to drop it to 4000K. If a facility is standardized on 4000K neutral, this lamp will read visibly bluer next to it. For garages, warehouses, and security lighting, 5000K is the usual spec.
8) What amp draw should I figure per lamp when I am sizing the circuit?
Draw runs 0.700A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.253A at 277V, so size from 0.700A per lamp on a 120V circuit and 0.253A on 277V. On a 20A 277V branch that is a lot of lamps, but the practical limit is usually the existing fixture whips, not the lamp.
9) Does this SATCO LED HID replacement qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S13122 is not DLC approved, so it will not clear utility programs that require a DLC listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant, which covers California code work, but if the rebate is what makes the project pencil out, this lamp will not capture it.
10) How long before I am back up on the lift to change these out?
Rated life on the S13122 is 50,000 hours. On a dusk to dawn parking lot schedule of roughly 4,000 hours a year, that is over a decade of service, against the one to three year relamp cycle a metal halide lamp typically forces. For a property manager, the labor and lift rental avoided is usually the bigger number than the energy.
11) Should I retrofit lamps like this or replace the whole HID fixture?
A ballast bypass corncob makes sense when the existing housing, lens, and pole are sound and you mainly want the wattage and the maintenance cycle down. You keep the fixture optics you already have, and the 360 degree corncob distribution mimics what the HID arc tube was doing, so the photometrics stay close. Full fixture replacement is the better call when the housings are corroded, when you need directional optics or cutoff control the old housing cannot give, or when a DLC rebate is driving the project, since this lamp is not DLC approved.
12) Is the SATCO S13122 dimmable, and will it work on my existing HID controls?
The lamp itself is dimmable. Note that as a ballast bypass lamp it runs on line voltage, so dimming means a line voltage dimmer on the circuit, not the HID ballast or any control that was driving it. Most retrofits of this type get wired straight to line and left undimmed.
13) What is the SATCO S13122 built out of, and will it hold up in a garage or exterior canopy?
The base is aluminum with polycarbonate, and the lens is clear polycarbonate over a white housing. Aluminum at the base carries heat away from the LEDs, and polycarbonate rather than glass means the lamp survives handling on a lift and vibration in a garage deck without shattering.
