Satco Lighting S23115 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to remove the existing HID ballast to install the Satco S23115 LED high bay lamp?
Yes. The S23115 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the existing magnetic or electronic HID ballast has to be removed and the socket wired directly to line voltage. It accepts 120V through 277V at 50-60Hz, so it works on either a 120V or a 277V circuit once the ballast is out of the loop. If you leave the ballast in place the lamp will not operate correctly.
2) Will the Satco S23115 screw into my existing mogul base high bay socket?
It uses a mogul extended base, which is a mogul screw base on an extended neck. It threads into a standard mogul socket, but the extended neck adds length, so check that the fixture housing and reflector have room before you commit to a fleet swap. The base is aluminum.
3) Can this LED high bay retrofit lamp go in a closed acrylic or glass fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed or gasketed high bay housing is acceptable. It is also rated for damp locations and can be mounted in any burning position, base up, base down or horizontal. Note it is specified for indoor use, so covered parking, wash bays and similar damp interior spaces are fine, but not direct wet exposure.
4) Does the Satco S23115 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. This lamp is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and Title 24 compliant. If rebate capture is driving the project, you need a DLC listed product instead.
5) What HID wattage does a 130W LED high bay lamp actually replace?
The S23115 draws 130 watts and puts out 16,300 lumens at 5000K, and Satco lists it against a 250W incandescent equivalent. For most warehouse and shop retrofits that lumen package covers the light level a mid-wattage metal halide high bay was delivering after it had aged, since HID output drops substantially over life. If you are matching a footcandle spec on a drawing rather than doing a like-for-like swap, work from the 16,300 lumen figure and the 115 degree beam spread.
6) How high can I mount this and still get even coverage on the floor?
The lamp has a 115 degree beam spread, which is a wide flood distribution rather than a narrow aisle beam. That spreads light broadly at moderate mounting heights, which suits open warehouse floors, shops and gyms. For tall racking aisles where you want the light driven down between shelves, a narrower aimed distribution does the job better than a 115 degree wide beam.
7) Will the Satco S23115 dim on my existing high bay dimming control?
The lamp is dimmable, but because it is a Type B ballast bypass lamp it is wired direct to line voltage, so dimming has to be handled by a line voltage dimmer on that circuit. There is no ballast or driver in the fixture to signal. On a straight on/off relay or contactor circuit it simply runs at full output.
8) What current draw should I use for circuit and breaker calculations on these high bay lamps?
Current runs 1.083A at 120V down to 0.469A at 277V, the higher figure applying to the low end of the 120V-277V range. Size the branch circuit off the 1.083A number if you are on 120V, which is where you fit the fewest lamps per circuit. The lamps operate at 50-60Hz.
9) Will this 5000K lamp match the other high bays already in my building?
It is fixed at 5000K, a cool daylight white, with 80 CRI. There is no field selectable color temperature on this lamp, so if your existing retrofits are 4000K the difference will be visible side by side. For a mixed space, standardize the whole bay on one color temperature rather than blending.
10) How long do these LED high bay replacement lamps last before they need relamping again?
Average rated life is 35,000 hours. On a two shift warehouse running roughly 4,000 hours a year, that is on the order of eight years between relamps, which is the maintenance case for pulling HID lamps that need replacing far more often.
