Satco Lighting S13136 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S13136 LED HID lamp need the existing ballast removed?
Yes. The S13136 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the socket. It accepts 120V through 277V at 60Hz, which covers most commercial fixtures, but it will not run through a magnetic or electronic HID ballast left in the circuit.
2) Will a 42W LED ED28 lamp put out enough light to replace my old metal halide or HPS bulb?
The Satco S13136 draws 42 watts and delivers 6000 lumens at 5000K with 80 CRI. Satco rates it as a 300W incandescent equivalent. Compare the 6000 lumen figure against the actual output of the HID lamp you are pulling, not its wattage - an aging HID lamp is often well below its original rating, but a high-output 175W or 250W metal halide will exceed 6000 lumens when new.
3) Does the S13136 fit a standard mogul E39 socket?
The base is a Mogul Extended type, not a plain mogul. The extended neck adds length ahead of the threads, so check socket depth and the fixture's lamp cavity before ordering - a lamp that screws in fine on the bench can foul a reflector or refractor in a shallow shoebox or wallpack. The lamp itself is an ED28 shape and weighs 0.49 lb.
4) Can this LED HID replacement go in an enclosed outdoor fixture or a wallpack?
Yes on both counts. The S13136 carries a wet location rating, is rated for indoor or outdoor use, and its enclosure rating covers both enclosed and open fixtures. Burning position is universal, so base up, base down, or horizontal all work - useful in shoeboxes, wallpacks, and high bays alike.
5) Does the Satco S13136 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
It is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant, which matters for California work. If rebate capture is driving the project, specify a DLC listed lamp or fixture instead.
6) Can I put the Satco S13136 on a dimmer or an occupancy sensor dimming control?
No. The S13136 is non-dimmable and is not a three-way lamp. On a dimming circuit it will flicker, buzz, or fail early. For a parking garage or corridor where you want step dimming, you need a dimmable LED HID lamp or a fixture-level LED retrofit instead. Straight on/off switching, photocells, and line-voltage occupancy switching are fine.
7) Will a 360 degree LED HID lamp work in my existing reflector, or do I need a directional one?
The S13136 emits across a full 360 degree beam spread, so it fills the fixture the same way the HID arc tube it replaces did and keeps the original reflector doing the aiming. That makes it a good match for vertical post tops, open high bays, and acorn fixtures. If you are relighting a low-mount wallpack where you want everything thrown forward, a directional LED HID lamp will put more of the 6000 lumens on the ground.
8) What circuit load should I figure for a run of these LED HID lamps?
Current draw on the S13136 is 0.350A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.152A at the high end, at 42 watts and 60Hz. On a 277V branch circuit that is roughly a sixth of an amp per lamp, so a bank of them loads a circuit far lighter than the HID gear they replace. Size and balance the circuit off the voltage you are actually running.
9) How long will these last before my maintenance crew is back on the lift?
Average rated life is 25,000 hours. Running dusk to dawn at roughly 4,000 hours a year, that is about six years between relamps - against HID lamps that lose output badly well before failure. Because it is a ballast bypass lamp, there is also no ballast left in the fixture to fail separately.
10) Will the 5000K color match the other LED lamps already in my building?
The S13136 is fixed at 5000K with 80 CRI - it is not a CCT selectable lamp, so there is no field switch to set it warmer. 5000K reads as a crisp daylight white and matches most exterior and warehouse LED already installed at that temperature. If your other openings are 4000K, these will visibly read bluer alongside them, so standardize on one temperature per elevation.
11) Is the S13136 a glass lamp or plastic?
Glass and metal. The lens is glass with a white finish and the housing is white, so it diffuses rather than showing hot spots from the diodes. Glass holds up better than polycarbonate against UV yellowing in exterior fixtures, but it is breakable - handle it like the HID lamp it replaces when you are working off a lift.
