Satco Lighting S13123 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I put the Satco S13123 corncob LED into an existing HID fixture without rewiring?
No. The S13123 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the existing HID ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the socket. It will not operate on a metal halide or HPS ballast. Budget the labor for a ballast removal on every fixture you convert.
2) Will a 277-480V LED corncob lamp work on a standard 120V circuit?
No. This 54W Satco corncob is built for 277V to 480V service only, at 50/60Hz. On a 120V branch circuit it will not light. High voltage retrofits like this are typical of warehouse, parking garage, and industrial high bay gear running 277 or 480 volt. If your fixtures are 120-277V, you need the line voltage version instead.
3) Does a mogul extended base LED bulb fit a standard mogul E39 socket?
The S13123 uses a mogul extended base, which threads into a mogul socket but sits the lamp body further out of the socket than a standard mogul lamp. That extra length matters in shallow or tight HID housings and in fixtures with a narrow neck. Measure the internal clearance of the housing before converting a whole building.
4) What HID wattage does this 54W LED corncob actually replace?
It is sold as a 250W equivalent, putting out 8100 lumens at 5000K with 80 CRI. So you are dropping from 250 watts of HID draw to 54 watts, and you get full output instantly with no warm-up or restrike delay that HID lamps have.
5) Can this LED corncob go inside a closed acorn or wallpack fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed acorn, jelly jar, or glass-lensed wallpack is fine. Location rating is damp, which covers covered walkways, parking structures, and canopies. It is not rated for direct exposure in a wet location.
6) Can I mount this corncob lamp base-up in a high bay, or does it have to hang down?
Burning position is universal, so base-up in a high bay, base-down in a post top, or horizontal in a wallpack all work. The 360 degree beam spread means light goes all the way around the lamp body, which suits open reflector HID housings; in a fixture with a tight optical cavity some of that output gets trapped.
7) Can these be put on a dimmer or an occupancy sensor dimming control?
No dimming. The 54W Satco HID replacement is non-dimmable and not three-way, so it runs at full output only. On a dimming circuit you will get flicker or no start. On/off occupancy switching is fine; step dimming is not.
8) Does the Satco S13123 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
It is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify for the utility rebate programs that require a DLC Qualified Products List entry. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If the rebate is driving the project, you need a DLC listed lamp or fixture instead.
9) How much current will each of these draw so I can size the circuit for a warehouse retrofit?
Draw runs 0.195A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.113A at the high end, since current falls as voltage rises for a fixed 54 watt load. On a 480V feed figure roughly 0.113A per lamp when you total up a run of fixtures.
10) How long do these last compared to the metal halide lamps I keep relamping?
Rated life is 50,000 hours. For a property running lights 12 hours a day that is over 11 years before rated end of life, versus the repeated relamping and lumen depreciation of HID. The relamping labor saved is usually the bigger number on a parking garage or high bay.
11) Is 5000K going to look different from the metal halide lamps on the rest of my site?
5000K is a cool, daylight-white tone, close to what most metal halide reads as, so mixing it alongside existing MH on a site usually looks consistent. It is a fixed color temperature, not CCT selectable, so every lamp in the order will match. Next to high pressure sodium it will look noticeably whiter.
12) What is this lamp made of and will it hold up in a hot fixture?
The base and body use aluminum with polycarbonate, aluminum being the heat sink that carries heat away from the LEDs, and the lens is clear polycarbonate rather than glass. Housing color is white and grey. Aluminum construction plus the enclosed fixture rating is what lets it run in a closed HID housing.
