Satco Lighting S49394 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to remove the existing ballast to install the Satco S49394 54W LED corncob lamp?
Yes. The S49394 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the socket. It runs on 100V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so it works on both 120V and 277V circuits once the ballast is out of the path. Leaving the ballast in line will damage the lamp.
2) What HID wattage does this 54W Satco LED corncob actually replace?
At 7,452 lumens it is aimed at replacing metal halide and HPS lamps in the 175W to 250W class, and Satco lists it as a 200W incandescent equivalent. Compare delivered lumens rather than watts, since an aged HID lamp may already be putting out far less than its rating.
3) Can I use this lamp in an enclosed fixture like a wall pack or acorn?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is fine. It is rated for damp locations indoor or outdoor, which covers a covered wall pack, canopy, or parking garage, but not a wet location with direct water exposure.
4) Will this Satco LED HID lamp qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S49394 is not DLC listed, so it will not clear utility programs that require a DLC qualified product. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If the rebate is driving the project, you need a DLC listed lamp or fixture instead.
5) Does it matter if the fixture is base-up, base-down, or horizontal?
No. Burning position is universal, so the corncob body can run base up in a high bay, base down in a shoebox, or horizontal in a wall pack. The 300 degree beam spread means the light goes nearly all the way around the lamp, so in a base-up fixture you are relying on the reflector to push output down.
6) Can the Satco S49394 be put on a dimmer or occupancy sensor dimming control?
It is not dimmable. On a dimming circuit expect flicker or failure, so use straight switched or relay control. For sensor-based savings you need a switching sensor, not a 0-10V dimming one.
7) Is this 5000K lamp going to match the other fixtures in my warehouse?
It is a fixed 5000K daylight color with 80 CRI, and it is not CCT selectable, so what you order is what you get. If the rest of the building is on 4000K, retrofitting a few bays with this lamp will read noticeably bluer. Standardize a whole area at a time.
8) How many of these can I put on a 20 amp 277V branch circuit?
Draw is 0.540A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.195A at 277V, at 54 watts. Size your circuits off the 277V figure if that is your service, and keep the continuous load at 80 percent of breaker rating per normal practice.
