Satco Lighting S49393 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Satco S49393 45W LED corncob work if I leave the existing HID ballast in the fixture?
No. The S49393 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so it wires direct to line voltage and the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed first. Leave the ballast in circuit and the lamp will not run correctly. Line side is 100V to 277V at 50/60Hz, which covers 120V, 208V, 240V and 277V fixtures, so an electrician can bypass and land the leads on any of those without changing lamps.
2) Can I use this 45W LED HID replacement lamp inside a sealed or enclosed fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a gasketed acorn, a sealed wall pack or a glass lensed high bay is fair game. Many LED corncobs are not, and running a non enclosed rated lamp in a sealed housing cooks the driver early. It is also universal burning position, so base up, base down or horizontal all work.
3) Is the Satco S49393 rated for outdoor parking lot and wall pack use?
It is listed for indoor and outdoor use with a damp location rating. Damp covers a covered soffit, a canopy, a parking garage or the inside of a weatherproof fixture housing. It is not a wet location rating, so the lamp needs a fixture that keeps direct rain and standing water off it, which is how a wall pack or shoebox optic normally works anyway.
4) Can I put the S49393 on a dimmer or an occupancy sensor that dims?
No, this lamp is not dimmable. Wire it to a switched or contactor controlled circuit only. Putting it on a dimming leg will give you flicker, buzz or a dead lamp. On off occupancy control is fine; dimming control is not. It is also not a three way lamp and the color temperature is fixed at 5000K, not field selectable.
5) How much light does a 45 watt LED corncob actually put out compared to the metal halide lamp I am taking out?
6210 lumens at 45 watts, 5000K, with an 80 CRI. Satco rates it as a 125W incandescent equivalent. For an HID retrofit, judge it on delivered lumens rather than the old lamp wattage, because a used metal halide lamp is typically running well below its original output by the time it gets swapped. The 300 degree beam spread throws light nearly all the way around the lamp, so it fills a reflector the way the old arc tube did instead of firing one direction.
6) Will 5000K LED corncobs match the other retrofitted fixtures in my building?
The S49393 is a fixed 5000K lamp with no selectable color option, so every one you order lands on the same daylight white. That makes it easy to standardize a garage, a warehouse or a lot on one color. It will not match 4000K neutral white or 3000K warm fixtures, and mixing them in one sightline is obvious. If your other openings are already on 4000K, order the 4000K version of the lamp rather than trying to blend.
7) What current draw should I use for sizing a circuit when I relamp a run of fixtures with these?
Draw is 0.450A down to 0.162A across the 100V to 277V input range, the higher figure at low line voltage and the lower at 277V. On a 277V branch that is roughly a sixth of an amp per lamp, so a circuit that carried a handful of metal halide fixtures will now carry many more. Size and count from the actual voltage you are landing on.
8) How long will these LED HID replacement lamps last before maintenance has to get back up on the lift?
Rated 35,000 average hours. On a dusk to dawn lot running about 4,300 hours a year, that is roughly eight years of service. That relamp interval is usually the whole argument for the retrofit, since metal halide in the same fixture wants replacing far more often and loses output the entire time it is in there.
9) Does the Satco S49393 qualify for California Title 24?
Yes, the lamp is Title 24 compliant, which matters on California work where the lighting has to hit state energy code. It is also FCC compliant for electromagnetic interference. Note it is not a DLC listed product, so if your utility rebate program requires a DLC qualified lamp, this one will not draw that rebate.
10) Should I buy a ballast bypass corncob or a ballast compatible plug and play LED lamp for my HID fixtures?
A Type B lamp like the S49393 wires straight to line voltage and the old ballast comes out, so you take the ballast failure and the ballast losses off the table permanently. The tradeoff is that it is an electrician job at each fixture, not a lamp swap from a lift. A ballast compatible lamp goes in without touching the wiring, but it stays hostage to a ballast that is often already near the end of its life. If the ballasts in the fixtures are old or already failing, bypass is the one worth doing once.
11) What is the lamp body made of, and will it hold up in a hot high bay?
The base end is aluminum with polycarbonate, and the lens is clear polycarbonate. The aluminum section is the heat sink, which is why the housing runs warm in service and why the fixture needs to be one this lamp is rated for. Polycarbonate lens rather than glass means it survives handling on a lift and vibration in a garage or dock better than the arc tube lamp it replaces. Housing color is white.
12) What is the Satco part number for the 45W 5000K extended mogul corncob so I can order more of the same?
Satco S49393, sold in white. It is the Economy Hi-Pro series, 45W, 5000K, extended mogul base, Type B ballast bypass. Order against S49393 and you get the same lamp every time; the wattage and color temperature variants in the family carry their own numbers, so the part number is what pins the exact color and output.
