Satco Lighting S49395 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to remove the existing ballast to install the Satco S49395 80W LED corncob lamp?
Yes. The S49395 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the socket. It accepts 100V-277V at 50/60Hz, so it works on 120V, 208V, 240V or 277V circuits once the ballast is out of the loop. Leaving the old magnetic or electronic ballast in line will damage the lamp.
2) Will an 80W LED replace the 400W metal halide lamps in my warehouse high bays?
That is what the S49395 is built for. It draws 80 watts and puts out 11,040 lumens at 5000K, and Satco rates it as a 400W equivalent. Expect a different light distribution than a 400W HID arc tube though: the corncob shape throws 300 degrees, so in a reflector fixture designed around a small arc source you may see more light at the sides and less straight down.
3) Can I use this Satco corncob LED in a closed acorn or wall pack fixture?
Yes, the S49395 is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed fixtures like acorns, wall packs and glass-lensed shoebox heads are fair game. It is also damp location rated and listed for indoor or outdoor use, which covers covered walkways, canopies and parking structures. Wet location fixtures with direct water exposure are outside a damp rating.
4) What does extended mogul base mean, and will it still seat in my standard E39 socket?
The S49395 uses a mogul extended base, which is a mogul screw base on a longer neck. The extension pushes the lamp body farther out of the socket so the LED housing clears deep socket cups and porcelain holders that a standard-neck corncob bottoms out in. It threads into the same mogul socket, but you need the extra depth inside the fixture to accommodate the longer overall length. If your fixture is tight on height, a standard mogul base corncob is the better choice.
5) Does this Satco corncob LED qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S49395 is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify for utility incentive programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If the rebate paperwork is the driver on your project, you need a DLC-listed LED HID replacement.
6) Can this lamp be installed base up in a high bay, or does it have to hang base down?
Either way. The S49395 is rated for base up or base down burning position, so it works in pendant high bays, post-top fixtures and shoebox heads alike. Horizontal orientation is not among the stated positions.
7) Will this Satco LED HID replacement work on a dimmer or with occupancy sensor dimming controls?
No. The S49395 is non-dimmable and not a three-way lamp. On a dimming circuit expect flicker, buzz or early failure. For sensor-controlled areas, use on/off switching only, or specify a dimmable LED retrofit instead.
8) How much current does the 80W Satco ballast bypass LED draw, and how many can I put on one 20A circuit?
Current runs 0.800A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.289A at the high end, because the lamp holds 80 watts across 100V-277V. At 120V you are near the high-current end, so figure on the 0.8A figure for sizing; at 277V it is under 0.3A per lamp. Apply your own breaker loading rules to that per-lamp draw.
9) Will the 5000K color on this lamp match the other bulbs in my facility?
The S49395 is fixed at 5000K, a cool daylight white, with an 80 CRI and a clear polycarbonate lens. It is not CCT selectable, so if the rest of your building is running 4000K neutral white it will read noticeably bluer side by side. For a mixed-space retrofit, standardize the whole area on one color temperature rather than swapping lamps piecemeal.
10) How long before I am back up on the lift relamping these?
The S49395 is rated 35,000 average hours. On a 12-hour-a-day schedule that is roughly eight years of service, which is the main reason facilities move off 400W metal halide in hard-to-reach high bays. The lamp weighs 3 lb, so check that the socket and any older porcelain holder can carry that hanging weight before you commit a whole building.
11) Is the body on this corncob LED metal or plastic, and does it need airflow to shed heat?
Construction is aluminum and polycarbonate: an aluminum heat sink body with a polycarbonate lens, finished in white. Because the lamp is enclosed rated, it does not depend on open air around it, which is what lets it go into sealed acorns and wall packs where many corncobs are restricted to open fixtures.
