Satco Lighting S13162 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Satco S13162 LED lamp be wired straight to line voltage with the existing ballast removed?
That's exactly how it's meant to run. The S13162 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID or CFL ballast has to be removed and the medium base socket wired directly to line voltage. It accepts 100V to 277V at 50/60Hz, which covers 120V and 277V commercial circuits off the same part number. Leaving a ballast in the circuit is not an option with this lamp.
2) What wattage and color temperature choices does the S13162 A-Plus 28 lamp give me, and how are they set?
Two wattage settings, 35W or 17W, and three color temperatures, 3000K, 4000K or 5000K. Output follows the wattage setting: 4550 lumens at the high setting and 2380 lumens at the low one. Because the selection is made on the lamp itself, you stock one SKU and set it at install rather than ordering a separate part per CCT, which is the practical appeal for a property manager standardizing across a building.
3) Can I put this Satco LED lamp in an enclosed fixture or a jelly jar?
Yes. The S13162 is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed and gasketed fixtures are fine, and it burns in any position, base up, base down or horizontal. Location rating is damp, so covered exterior soffits, garages and walkways are in scope, but it is not rated for direct wet exposure.
4) What incandescent bulb does a 35W A-Plus 28 LED replace?
At its 35W setting the lamp is rated as a 300W incandescent equivalent, putting out 4550 lumens. That's a high-output A-shape lamp for high bay, warehouse, parking garage and stairwell sockets where an oversized incandescent or an HID retrofit used to sit.
5) Will the S13162 work on a dimmer or a three-way socket?
Both. It's a dimmable lamp and it's three-way capable. Keep in mind it's a ballast bypass lamp, so any dimming control has to be on the line voltage side after the ballast is removed.
6) Does this lamp qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S13162 is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. If the rebate is driving the job, you need a DLC listed lamp instead. The lamp is FCC compliant and is lawful for sale in California.
7) How long does the Satco A-Plus 28 LED last, and what does it draw on a 120V circuit?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. Current draw is listed as 0.350-0.126/0.170-0.061A across the voltage range for the two wattage settings, so the high setting pulls about 0.350A at the low end of the voltage range and 0.126A at the high end, with roughly half that on the 17W setting. That matters when you're counting how many lamps you can hang on one circuit.
8) How wide does the S13162 throw light, and what is the color quality?
Beam spread is 280 degrees, so it distributes almost all the way around the lamp rather than throwing a directional cone, which suits open reflectors and jelly jars. CRI is 80, a normal commercial rendering level for corridors, storage and parking areas but below what you'd spec for retail merchandising or color-critical work.
9) What is the S13162 lamp actually made of?
Aluminum base for heat dissipation, with a frosted polycarbonate lens over the diodes. The polycarbonate lens means no glass to shatter, which is a point in its favor for parking structures, gyms and loading docks. Housing color is white.
