Satco Lighting S13164 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Satco S13164 A-Plus 32 LED lamp go straight into an existing HID fixture socket, or does the ballast have to come out?
The ballast has to go. The S13164 is a ballast bypass (Type B) lamp, so it wires directly to line voltage at the medium socket. Leaving an existing HID or CFL ballast in the circuit is not how this lamp is meant to run. It accepts 100V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential and on 277V commercial lighting circuits once the ballast is removed and the socket is wired to line.
2) What wattage and color temperature settings does the S13164 selectable LED lamp offer?
Two wattages and three color temperatures, set on the lamp itself. Wattage selects between 45W and 22W, giving 5850 lumens at the high setting and 3060 lumens at the low one. Color selects 3000K, 4000K or 5000K. That means one part number covers warm-white residential corridors and 5000K parking or shop areas, which is why MRO and property buyers stock it instead of carrying three SKUs.
3) Can this Satco LED lamp be used in a fully enclosed fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed jelly-jar, drum, and closed globe fixtures are fair game. That matters because most high-output LED lamps trap heat and fail early in enclosed housings. It also burns in any position, base up, base down or horizontal, so you are not limited by how the socket is oriented.
4) Is the S13164 rated for outdoor use in a wall pack or exterior fixture?
It is listed for indoor and outdoor use with a damp location rating. Damp means covered exteriors, soffits, porches, canopies and enclosed wall packs where the lamp is shielded from direct rain. It is not a wet location lamp, so an open fixture taking direct weather is the wrong application.
5) What incandescent bulb does a 45W A-Plus 32 LED replace?
At the 45W setting it is rated as a 300W incandescent equivalent, putting out 5850 lumens. Drop it to the 22W setting and you get 3060 lumens, which is closer to a 200W incandescent range of output. It is a big A-shape lamp, so check the fixture opening before you assume a 300W incandescent globe will swap one for one.
6) Will this LED lamp dim on an existing dimmer, and does it work in a three-way socket?
The lamp is dimmable and is marked three-way capable. Keep in mind that wattage selection and dimming are separate things here: the 45W/22W switch is set on the lamp, while the dimmer controls output from whichever setting you chose. As with any LED, dimmer compatibility depends on the control, so an LED-rated dimmer is the safer pairing.
7) How long does the S13164 last and how much current does it draw for circuit loading?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. For load calculations, current runs 0.450 to 0.162A and 0.220 to 0.079A across the voltage range and wattage settings, the higher figures at 120V and the lower at 277V. On a large relamp that low draw is what lets you put a long run of fixtures on one circuit where the old incandescent or HID load would not fit.
8) Is this Satco lamp DLC listed for utility rebate paperwork?
No. The S13164 is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under rebate programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and is marked lawful for sale in California. If a rebate is driving the spec, you need a DLC-listed lamp instead.
9) How much of the room does a 280 degree beam spread cover compared with a standard LED A-lamp?
A 280 degree spread is close to omnidirectional, so light goes out sideways and back toward the base, not just forward. In a pendant, open globe or table fixture that keeps the shade lit instead of leaving a dark ring above the lamp. The frosted polycarbonate lens diffuses the output, and at 80 CRI the color rendering is typical for general commercial and multi-family lighting rather than retail display work.
10) What is the S13164 made of, and will the white housing show in an open fixture?
The base is aluminum, which doubles as the heat sink, the housing is white, and the lens is frosted polycarbonate rather than glass. In an open or clear-glass fixture the white body is visible, so if you are matching the look of exposed filament or clear globe lamps elsewhere in the building this one will read differently. Polycarbonate also means it will not shatter like a glass envelope, which is worth something in a gym, stairwell or back-of-house area.
