Satco Lighting S16501 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S16501 LED circline need the existing ballast removed?
Yes. The S16501 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing magnetic or electronic ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the G10q socket. Leaving the ballast in the circuit is not an option with this lamp. It accepts 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, drawing 0.092A down to 0.040A depending on supply voltage, so the same lamp works on either a 120V residential fixture or a 277V commercial circuit once rewired.
2) Will this LED circline fit my existing 4-pin circline fixture socket?
It uses a G10q 4-pin base, which is the same socket type as a standard T9 fluorescent circline lamp, and the lamp shape is T9. So it drops into the existing socket mechanically. The electrical side is what changes: it is a ballast bypass lamp, so the fixture has to be rewired for line voltage first.
3) Can I put the Satco S16501 circline on a dimmer?
No. The 11W LED circline is non-dimmable and is not a three-way lamp. Wire it to a straight on/off switch. Putting it on a dimmer or three-way socket risks flicker and early failure.
4) Is this circline LED safe to use in a closed ceiling fixture or a bathroom?
Both are fine within limits. The lamp is enclosed rated, so it can go inside a sealed drum or glass ceiling fixture, and it carries a Damp location rating, which covers a bathroom ceiling or a covered porch. Damp is not wet rated, so keep it out of places with direct water contact or driving rain. Burning position is universal, so it can be mounted face down, face up, or vertical.
5) How much light does an 11W LED circline actually put out compared to the fluorescent it replaces?
1210 lumens at 11 watts, with an incandescent equivalence of 50W. Beam spread is 135 degrees and the lens is frosted, so output is wide and diffuse rather than directional, which is what you want for a ceiling or utility fixture where the old circline lit the whole room. Rated life is 50,000 hours.
6) Will 4000K match the other lamps in my building, and can I change the color temperature?
The S16501 is fixed at 4000K neutral white with an 80 CRI. It is not CCT selectable, so if the rest of your fixtures are 3000K warm white or 5000K daylight, this lamp will read visibly different next to them. For a standardized retrofit across a property, pick a single CCT and stay with it.
7) Does this Satco circline qualify for California Title 24?
Yes, the S16501 is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. It is not DLC listed, so if your utility rebate program requires a DLC Qualified Products List entry, this lamp will not satisfy that requirement.
8) What does the Satco S16501 circline look like installed?
White housing with a frosted lens over the LED ring, in the standard T9 circline form. The frost diffuser hides the individual diodes, so you get an even glow rather than visible dots through a bare fixture.
