Satco Lighting S16502 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Satco S16502 LED circline work in my existing fixture that still has the old magnetic ballast?
Only if the ballast is removed from the circuit. The S16502 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so it wires direct to line voltage and the existing ballast has to be bypassed or taken out. Drop it into a ballasted fixture without rewiring and it will not run. Once bypassed it accepts anything from 120 to 277 volts at 50/60Hz, which covers both residential 120V and commercial 277V lighting circuits on the same part number.
2) Does the S16502 circline use the same 4-pin base as the fluorescent circline I am replacing?
It uses a G10q 4-pin base, which is the standard circline connector on T9 fluorescent lamps. The S16502 is a T9 shape, so it seats in the same lampholder and clips as the fluorescent it replaces. What changes is the wiring, not the socket: the lamp runs on line voltage with the ballast bypassed.
3) Can I put the Satco S16502 circline on a dimmer switch?
No. The S16502 is a non-dimming lamp. On a dimmer it will flicker, buzz, or fail early, and the dimmer itself can be damaged. If the fixture is on a dimmed circuit, either change the switch to a standard toggle or pick a dimmable lamp instead. It also is not a three-way lamp and does not have selectable color temperature.
4) Will this Satco circline match the other LED fixtures in my building, or will it look different?
6500K is daylight white, the coolest and bluest end of the common range, with a CRI of 80. Next to 3000K or 4000K lamps in the same hallway or unit it will read noticeably bluer. If you are standardizing a property, either put 6500K everywhere in that space or choose a warmer color temperature for these fixtures. Where it works well is shops, garages, laundry rooms, and back-of-house areas where crisp white light is wanted.
5) Can this LED circline go in a closed ceiling pan or a fully enclosed fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed drum, a closed ceiling pan, or a covered utility fixture is fine. Many LED lamps are not, because trapped heat cooks the driver. It also carries a damp location rating, which covers bathrooms, covered porches, and laundry areas, but not direct exposure to rain or wet locations.
6) How bright is the 11W Satco LED circline compared to the incandescent circline it replaces?
1210 lumens off 11 watts, which Satco rates as a 50 watt incandescent equivalent. For a stairwell, closet, laundry, or utility ceiling fixture that is a straight swap on output with roughly a fifth of the draw. Current pull runs 0.092A at 120V down to 0.040A at 277V, so a lot of these can sit on one branch circuit.
7) Does the Satco S16502 qualify for a utility rebate?
It is Title 24 compliant, which matters for California energy code work, but it is not DLC listed. Most commercial utility rebate programs pay out against the DLC Qualified Products List, so this lamp will generally not carry a prescriptive rebate. If rebate dollars are driving the retrofit, specify a DLC listed product instead.
8) How long will this LED circline last before maintenance has to change it again?
Rated 50,000 hours. On a common area fixture running 12 hours a day that is over 11 years of service, versus the annual or biennial relamping a fluorescent circline demands. For a property manager or MRO buyer, the labor saved on ladder trips is usually the larger number, not the energy.
9) What is the Satco part number for the 11W 6500K LED circline so I can order the right one?
S16502 is the manufacturer part number, and it identifies the 11 watt, 6500K, T9 circline with a G10q base. Satco builds this circline in more than one wattage and color temperature, so confirming the S16502 number rather than describing the lamp is what keeps a daylight lamp from arriving where a warm white was specified.
10) Can the Satco S16502 circline be mounted with the lamp face down or on its side?
Burning position is universal, so it can be installed base up, base down, horizontal, or on an angled surface with no change in rated life. That matters for circline fixtures on sloped ceilings or in wall-mounted vanity and utility housings.
11) How wide does the light spread from this LED circline, and will it light a room evenly?
135 degree beam spread with a frosted lens, so the output is wide and diffused rather than directional. In a ceiling pan or a flush drum it fills the room without a hot spot, which is how a fluorescent circline behaved. It will not throw light down a long narrow beam, so it is not a task or accent lamp.
12) Will this Satco LED circline cause radio or electronic interference in an office?
It is FCC compliant, so the driver meets the emissions limits for consumer and commercial electronic equipment. That is the concern in offices, healthcare spaces, and anywhere near two-way radio or sensitive electronics, since ballast bypass LED lamps put a driver directly on the branch circuit.
13) What is the housing of the Satco S16502 circline made of, and what color is it?
Aluminum and plastic construction with a white housing and a frosted lens. The aluminum handles heat sinking for the LEDs, the plastic keeps the weight off the lampholder, and the white body disappears against a standard ceiling pan when the fixture cover is off or partially open.
