Satco Lighting S16505 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Satco S16505 LED circline work in my existing fixture with the old magnetic or electronic ballast still in it?
No. The S16505 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the ballast has to come out and the fixture rewired to run line voltage direct to the G10q socket. Leave the ballast in place and the lamp will not run correctly. It accepts 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on residential 120V and commercial 277V lighting circuits once the fixture is bypassed.
2) Does the S16505 circline fit a G10q 4-pin socket, and will it drop into a fixture that used a T9 fluorescent circline?
The lamp is a T9 shape with a G10q 4-pin base, which is the standard connector on fluorescent circline fixtures, so it lands in the same socket. The one change is electrical, not mechanical: the fixture must be rewired for ballast bypass before the lamp goes in.
3) Can I put the Satco S16505 circline on a dimmer switch?
No, the 16W circline is non-dimmable. Wire it to a plain on/off switch. On an existing dimmer it can flicker, buzz, or fail early, so if the room is on a dimmer circuit, either replace the control with a standard switch or pick a lamp rated dimmable.
4) Is 6500K too cold a color for an apartment kitchen or hallway?
6500K is daylight white, a cool blue-white. It reads clean and bright in garages, laundry rooms, utility spaces, shops, and back-of-house areas. In residential living space it will look noticeably colder than the warm 2700K to 3000K most tenants expect, and it will not match warmer lamps in adjacent fixtures. The color is fixed, not selectable, so if you are standardizing a building on warm light, this is the wrong lamp for those rooms. CRI is 80.
5) Can this LED circline go in a closed drum fixture or a covered ceiling pan?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed drum, pan, or covered ceiling fixture is fine. Many LED retrofits are not, and heat buildup in a closed housing shortens their life. Mounting orientation is open too, with a universal burning position, so it can run base up, base down, or horizontal.
6) How much light does the 16W LED circline put out compared to the fluorescent circline it replaces?
1760 lumens from 16 watts, which Satco rates against a 100W incandescent. That is the light level to check your space against before swapping: if the room is currently lit by a 32W or 40W fluorescent circline, compare against its lumen output, not its wattage.
7) Can I use this circline lamp in a bathroom, covered porch, or unheated basement?
Damp location rated, so a bathroom, a covered exterior porch, or a damp basement is within rating. It is not wet location rated, so keep it out of anywhere exposed to direct rain, spray, or hose-down washdown.
8) Is the Satco S16505 LED circline worth the relamp labor across a portfolio of units?
Rated 50,000 hours at 16 watts, which is the case for doing the ballast bypass once rather than replacing fluorescent circlines and failed ballasts repeatedly. Current draw runs 0.133A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.058A at the high end, so on 277V branch circuits you can load more fixtures per circuit than the fluorescent equivalent. It is Title 24 compliant, which matters on California work.
9) Does the Satco S16505 qualify for a utility rebate through DLC?
Not through the DesignLights Consortium. The S16505 is not DLC listed, so commercial rebate programs that require a DLC qualified product will not accept it. It does hold Title 24 compliance for California energy code work and is FCC compliant.
10) What do I need to order besides the lamp to convert a fluorescent circline fixture to LED?
Just the lamp itself, Satco S16505, in frost. There is one configuration, no color or wattage choices to specify. What the order does not include is the labor side of a Type B conversion: an electrician removes the ballast and wires line voltage to the G10q socket. Budget that per fixture, and confirm the fixture is not on a dimmer, since this lamp is not dimmable.
11) How does the light spread from a Satco S16505 circline, and will it leave hot spots on the ceiling?
135 degree beam spread with a frosted lens, which is a wide wash rather than a directional beam. The frost diffuses the diodes so you get even light through the fixture shade instead of visible bright points. Housing is white.
