Satco Lighting S18401 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I just drop the Satco S18401 LED PL lamp into my existing CFL fixture without rewiring?
No. The S18401 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. Dropping it into a fixture that still has a live ballast will not work. Once bypassed it runs on anything from 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so it suits both residential and commercial circuits.
2) Will a G23 2-pin LED PL lamp fit my 4-pin PL socket?
No. The S18401 has a G23 2-pin base and only seats in a 2-pin G23 socket. A 4-pin fixture (G24q or GX24q) needs a 4-pin lamp; the pin spacing and keying are different and forcing it is not an option.
3) Can I put this LED PL lamp on a dimmer?
No. The S18401 is non-dimmable. On a dimming circuit expect flicker, buzz, or no start at all. If the fixture is on a dimmer, either replace the dimmer with a standard switch or specify a lamp rated for dimming.
4) Is the Satco S18401 PL lamp OK in an enclosed fixture or a bathroom?
Enclosed rated, so it can go in a sealed or closed-lens fixture. Location rating is damp, which covers bathrooms, covered exterior soffits, and similar damp areas. It is not rated for wet locations with direct water exposure.
5) What CFL wattage does the 4.5W Satco S18401 replace in a stairwell or corridor fixture?
At 4.5 watts it puts out 450 lumens, which Satco rates as a 40W incandescent equivalent. In PL terms that is the light level you would expect from a small 2-pin compact fluorescent, so it suits low-output wall packs, stairwell cans, and vanity or closet fixtures rather than high-output corridor lighting.
6) Does the S18401 have to be mounted base-up or can it go horizontal?
Burning position is universal, so base-up, base-down, or horizontal all work. That matters on PL retrofits where the socket orientation is fixed by the existing housing. The 360 degree beam angle means light distribution stays even whichever way it sits.
7) Will 3000K match the other bulbs already in my building?
The S18401 is fixed at 3000K warm white with 80 CRI and a frosted lens. It is not CCT selectable, so it cannot be field-set to 3500K or 4000K. If your other fixtures are running 4000K neutral white, this lamp will read noticeably warmer next to them.
8) Does this Satco PL lamp qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S18401 is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant for electromagnetic interference.
9) How long does the Satco S18401 last and how much current does it draw per lamp?
Rated at 50,000 average hours, with a draw of 0.038A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.016A at the high end. For a property manager sizing a circuit on a multi-lamp retrofit, that current figure is what you load up against the breaker.
10) What is the S18401 made of, and will it yellow in a closed fixture?
Plastic construction throughout: a plastic G23 base, a white housing, and a polystyrene frosted lens. It is enclosed rated, so it is built to tolerate the heat buildup inside a sealed fixture.
