Satco Lighting S18402 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I just drop the Satco S18402 PL lamp into my existing CFL fixture without rewiring?
No. The S18402 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the fixture has to be rewired to send line voltage straight to the G23 sockets. If the existing ballast is left in the circuit, the lamp will not operate correctly. Plan on removing or bypassing the ballast as part of the install. Once wired direct, it runs on anything from 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz.
2) Will the S18402 fit a 4-pin CFL socket?
It will not. This Satco PL lamp has a G23 two-pin base, so it only seats in a 2-pin socket. A 4-pin fixture uses a G24q or GX24q socket and needs a 4-pin lamp instead. Count the pins on the old lamp before ordering.
3) Can I use this Satco PL lamp in a closed shower light or a fully enclosed ceiling fixture?
Yes on both counts. It is an enclosed rated lamp, so heat buildup in a sealed housing is accounted for, and it carries a damp location rating, which covers a bathroom or covered exterior soffit. Damp is not wet, so keep it out of anywhere exposed to direct water.
4) Will the S18402 work on a dimmer?
No. This 4.5W LED PL lamp is non-dimmable and has no three-way function. On a dimmer circuit expect flicker, buzz or no start at all. If the fixture is on a dimmed circuit, either swap the control to a standard switch or spec a dimmable lamp.
5) What CFL wattage does this 4.5W LED PL lamp replace?
It is built as a 40W incandescent equivalent, putting out 450 lumens from 4.5 watts. Current draw is 0.038 to 0.016 amps depending on where in the 120V to 277V range it is running, so a bank of them on one circuit pulls very little.
6) Is 3500K going to match the other lamps in my building?
The S18402 is fixed at 3500K, a neutral white that sits between warm 2700K/3000K and cool 4000K. It is not CCT selectable, so it cannot be field-adjusted to match. Color rendering is 80 CRI. If your other openings are lamped at 4000K or 3000K, this one will read noticeably different, so standardize the whole space on one temperature.
7) Do LED PL lamps like this one throw light all the way around, or only out one side?
This one is a full 360 degree beam spread with a frosted plastic lens, so it distributes light the way the original CFL did rather than aiming it in one direction. That matters in a drum sconce or a diffused ceiling fixture where a one-sided LED leaves a dark side. The housing is white.
8) Does the Satco S18402 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
It is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under rebate programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant. For rebate-driven retrofits, check your utility's program requirements before committing to a quantity.
9) Does this PL LED have to be mounted base up or base down?
Burning position is universal, so it can go base up, base down, or horizontal without affecting performance or rated life. Useful in stairwell and wall sconce retrofits where the old CFL sockets face every direction.
10) How long will these last before maintenance has to relamp again?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. Running roughly 12 hours a day, that is on the order of a decade of service, which is why these get spec'd for stairwells and corridors where access is a lift job. Part number for reorder is Satco S18402.
