Satco Lighting S18400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S18400 LED PL lamp work with my existing CFL ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
The S18400 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing CFL ballast has to come out and the sockets get wired directly to line voltage. Drop it into a fixture with the ballast still in place and it will not run correctly. It accepts 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on residential 120V and commercial 277V circuits once the bypass wiring is done.
2) Can I put this LED PL lamp in an enclosed fixture or a bathroom vanity?
Yes on both counts. The S18400 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is fine, and it carries a damp location rating, which covers bathrooms, covered porches and similar damp spots. It is not rated for wet locations with direct water exposure.
3) Is the Satco S18400 dimmable?
No. It is a non-dimming lamp. Put it on a dimmer circuit and you can expect flicker, buzz or premature failure. If the fixture is on a dimmer, either replace the dimmer with a standard switch or pick a lamp specified as dimmable. It is also not a three-way lamp and the color temperature is fixed, not CCT selectable.
4) What incandescent or CFL wattage does the 4.5W Satco S18400 replace?
It replaces a 40 watt incandescent, putting out 450 lumens on 4.5 watts. Current draw runs 0.038A down to 0.016A depending on whether you are on 120V or 277V, which is what lets a long run of these sit on one circuit without tripping.
5) Will this LED match the warm light of the CFL PL lamps already in my building?
At 2700K it is the warm white end of the range, the same nominal color as a standard soft white incandescent or a 2700K CFL. Color rendering is 80 CRI. If the other fixtures in the space are 3000K or 3500K, this lamp will read visibly yellower next to them, so standardize a floor or a corridor at a time.
6) Can I mount this PL lamp base-up or sideways in a sconce?
Burning position is universal, so base up, base down or horizontal all work. The beam spread is a full 360 degrees with a frosted plastic lens, so it throws light all the way around rather than in one direction, which is what you want in a sconce, a stairwell fixture or an open downlight where the old twin-tube CFL was.
7) Is the Satco S18400 DLC listed for utility rebates?
It is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under a utility program that requires a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and lawful for sale in California. If a rebate is driving the job, verify the program's qualified products list before you commit to a lamp.
8) How long do these last compared to the CFLs I keep relamping?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. For a property manager running stairwell or corridor fixtures close to around the clock, that is the argument for doing the ballast bypass once instead of changing twin-tube CFLs on a cycle. The housing is white and the lamp is a standard PL shape, so it looks the same in an open fixture.
