Satco Lighting S21236 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Satco S21236 G25 LED bulb work in an enclosed vanity fixture or a sealed outdoor lantern?
Yes on both counts. The S21236 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed globe or glass-shade vanity fixture won't void it, and it carries a Wet location rating for indoor or outdoor use. That covers covered porch lanterns, post lights and exterior sconces where the lamp can see moisture.
2) What color of white is 4000K, and will it match the 2700K bulbs already in my building?
4000K is a neutral or cool white, noticeably whiter than the warm yellow of a 2700K or 3000K lamp, and it will not blend if you mix it into an existing warm-white vanity bar or corridor. The S21236 is fixed at 4000K, not color selectable, so plan on relamping the whole run of fixtures when you switch. Where 4000K does work well is restrooms, laundry, back of house and exterior fixtures where a crisper white is wanted.
3) Is the Satco S21236 dimmable, and how many can I put on one dimmer circuit?
The S21236 is dimmable. It draws 0.050A at 120V, 60Hz, so the lamps themselves represent a very small load per bulb. Note that most forward-phase dimmers have a minimum load as well as a maximum, and a handful of 6W lamps can fall below it and flicker or fail to start. For dimming work use an LED-rated dimmer.
4) Will the clear glass on this G25 LED show the filament, or does it look like a frosted globe?
Clear glass with an LED filament construction, so the lit element is visible through the bulb, the way a vintage-style decorative lamp reads. If you are standing the bulbs bare on an exposed vanity bar or an open-bottom pendant, that visible filament is the look you get; if you want a diffuse white ball with no visible source, choose a frosted or white G25 instead.
5) Why would I pay for a 90 CRI bulb instead of a standard LED globe?
90 CRI means colors render close to how they look under incandescent or daylight, which matters most in the places G25 globes get used: bathroom and makeup mirrors, hospitality guest rooms, retail displays, and anywhere skin tone or fabric color has to look right. A typical 80 CRI LED will make the same space look flat or slightly off. For a hotel or multi-family interior standard, 90 CRI is the spec worth holding.
6) Can this G25 bulb be installed base-up in a pendant or sideways in a sconce?
Any orientation. Burning position is universal, so base up, base down, or horizontal all work. With a 300 degree beam spread the light is thrown nearly all the way around the globe, which is what you want in an open fixture or a shadeless mirror light rather than a directional downlight.
7) Does the Satco S21236 meet California Title 24 for residential lighting?
Yes, the S21236 is Title 24 compliant, which is the box to tick on California residential work where high-efficacy lamps are required. It is also FCC compliant. It is not a DLC listed product, so if a utility or commercial rebate program you are filing under requires DLC, this lamp will not qualify for it.
8) Will this bulb work in a three-way socket lamp?
The S21236 is not a three-way lamp. Screwed into a three-way socket it will light at full output on one or more of the switch positions rather than stepping through levels, so for a three-level table lamp you need a dedicated three-way bulb. For level control with this lamp, use it on an LED-compatible dimmer instead, since it is dimmable.
9) How long will these G25 LEDs last before my maintenance crew has to relamp?
Average rated life is 15,000 hours. On a bathroom or corridor fixture running roughly 6 hours a day that works out to around 6.8 years between relamps, which is why property managers standardize on these for hard-to-reach exterior and stairwell globes.
10) Is this a glass bulb or plastic, and what is the base made of?
Glass with a nickel plated aluminum base. The glass envelope is what lets the clear filament look work, and nickel plating on the screw shell resists corrosion better than bare brass in wet exterior sockets. Each lamp weighs 0.088 lb, so weight is a non-issue even on lightweight multi-arm fixtures.
