1) Does the Satco S23148 LED HID replacement need the existing ballast, or does it wire direct?
The S23148 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired straight to the socket. It will not run on an active HID ballast. Plan on an electrician touching each fixture, which is the tradeoff against a plug-and-play Type A lamp.
2) Will the Satco S23148 work on 120V and on 277V circuits?
Yes. The lamp is rated 100-277 volt, so the same part covers 120V residential-style circuits and 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. That lets a facility stock one lamp across mixed-voltage buildings.
3) I have metal halide fixtures with medium base sockets. Is this the right retrofit lamp?
That is the application it is built for. The S23148 is an LED HID replacement for medium-base HID lamps, but only after the ballast is bypassed. If you want to leave the ballast in place, this is not the lamp, you need a Type A ballast-compatible LED instead.
4) Is the Satco S23148 a single part number or are there different versions to pick from?
