Satco Lighting S28691 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I drop the Satco S28691 T5 LED into my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
No. The S28691 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. It accepts single-ended or double-ended wiring, so it works with either sockets rewired at one end or hot and neutral split across both ends. If you want a lamp that runs on the existing ballast with no rewiring, you need a Type A lamp instead.
2) Will this T5 LED fit my existing miniature bi-pin sockets?
The lamp uses a miniature bi-pin base, the same base type as standard T5 linear fluorescent lamps, so it seats in existing T5 lampholders. The electrical side is what changes, not the socket: the ballast must be bypassed and line voltage brought to the holders.
3) Is this lamp safe to use in an enclosed fixture or a damp area like a parking garage or kitchen?
It is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can be installed in sealed or gasketed fixtures where many LED tubes are not permitted. Location rating is damp, which covers covered exterior soffits, garages and similar damp spots, but not wet locations with direct water exposure.
4) What voltage can this 13W T5 LED tube be wired to?
It runs on any line voltage from 120V through 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential circuits and 277V commercial lighting branch circuits. Current draw is 0.108A at the low end of the range down to 0.047A at the high end.
5) Will 4000K match the other tubes already installed in my building?
The S28691 is fixed at 4000K neutral white with a CRI of 83. It is not CCT selectable, so there is no field switch to shift it to 3000K or 5000K. If your other openings are lamped at 3500K or 5000K, this will read visibly cooler or warmer, and for a mixed-ceiling retrofit you want to standardize all tubes on one color temperature.
6) How much light does the 13W T5 LED put out compared with the fluorescent tube it replaces?
1650 lumens from 13 watts, with a 50W incandescent equivalence. The 240 degree beam spread means it throws light nearly all the way around the tube rather than in a narrow band, so it fills a fluorescent reflector housing much the way the original lamp did.
7) Will this T5 LED work on my existing dimmer or a three-way circuit?
No. The S28691 is not a three-way lamp, and as a ballast bypass lamp it is wired to straight line voltage. Put it on a switched circuit, not a dimmed or three-way one.
8) Can I mount this tube vertically or in an upside-down fixture?
Burning position is universal, so it can be installed horizontally, vertically, base up or base down with no derating. That matters for cove, wall-grazing and under-cabinet runs where the lamp is not sitting flat.
9) Is the Satco S28691 a glass or plastic tube, and how long does it last?
Glass lens and glass base material with a frosted finish, which diffuses the diodes so you do not see individual points of light. Rated life is 50,000 average hours. On a 12 hour per day schedule that is roughly 11 years of service, which is why these get spec'd for high-ceiling and hard-to-reach fixtures.
