Satco Lighting S28690 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I install the Satco S28690 T5 LED tube in my existing fluorescent fixture without removing the ballast?
No. The S28690 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means it runs on line voltage direct to the sockets. The existing fluorescent ballast has to be removed or disconnected and the fixture rewired before the lamp goes in. Leaving the ballast in circuit will not work.
2) Does this 13W T5 LED wire single ended or double ended?
Either. The S28690 accepts single or double ended wiring, so it works whether you bring line and neutral to one end of the lamp or split them to opposite ends of the fixture. That flexibility matters on retrofits where you want to keep the existing tombstones at both ends.
3) Will this T5 LED run on 277 volt commercial circuits?
Yes. The lamp is rated 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same part number works on 120V residential or light commercial circuits and on 277V building lighting panels. No separate voltage version to specify.
4) Can I use this LED tube in a fully enclosed fixture or a damp location like a covered walkway?
Both are allowed. The S28690 is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed diffuser fixtures are fine, and it carries a damp location rating for covered exterior areas, bathrooms, and similar. Damp is not wet, so direct rain or hose exposure is out.
5) Will a 13W LED T5 give me enough light to replace the fluorescent tube I'm pulling out?
The S28690 puts out 1600 lumens at 13 watts, with a 50W incandescent equivalence rating and an 83 CRI. For most T5 strip and undercabinet applications that is a like-for-like swap on light output at a fraction of the draw, 0.108 to 0.047 amps depending on supply voltage.
6) Is 3500K the right color for matching the rest of my building's lighting?
3500K is a neutral white, between the warm 3000K often used in hospitality and the cooler 4000K common in offices and back-of-house. The S28690 is fixed at 3500K, it is not CCT selectable, so if your other fixtures are 4000K you will see a visible difference and should order the matching temperature instead.
7) Can I put the Satco S28690 on a dimmer?
No. The lamp is not three-way and has no dimming rating stated, so treat it as a non-dimming lamp and feed it from a switched line voltage circuit. On an existing dimmed fluorescent circuit, the dimming controls need to come out as part of the ballast bypass rewire.
8) Can this T5 LED be mounted vertically or in a cove at an angle?
Yes, burning position is universal, so the lamp can be run horizontal, vertical, or at any angle without derating. Useful in cove, display case, and vertical sign applications where the old fluorescent had position restrictions.
9) How long will these last before a maintenance crew has to go back up the ladder?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12 hour per day schedule that is over 11 years of service, which is why this style of lamp gets specified for high-ceiling and hard-access fixtures where relamping labor costs more than the lamp.
