Satco Lighting S28928 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Satco S28928 LED wall pack lamp go straight into an existing HID wall pack, or do I need to remove the ballast?
The S28928 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing ballast has to come out and line voltage has to be wired directly to the medium base socket. It accepts 100 to 277 volts at 50 to 60 Hz, so it works on 120V or 277V wall packs once the ballast is bypassed. Leaving the old ballast in circuit is not an option with this lamp.
2) How do I set the wattage and color temperature on the Satco S28928 selectable wall pack lamp?
Both are selected on the lamp itself before install. Wattage steps are 5W, 10W and 20W, giving 850, 1500 or 3000 lumens, and color is switchable between 3000K, 4000K and 5000K. One part number covers all nine combinations, so a property manager can stock a single lamp and set warm 3000K for a residential entry or 5000K for a parking area.
3) Will this Satco wall pack LED work inside a sealed fixture housing?
Yes. The S28928 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can run inside a closed wall pack or lens-covered housing without the heat shortening its life. It is rated for damp locations and listed for indoor or outdoor use, which covers a covered wall pack or soffit. It is not rated for wet locations, so a fixture with direct water exposure is the wrong application.
4) Does the Satco S28928 corncob lamp have to be mounted in a particular orientation?
Burning position is horizontal. The corncob body with a 180 degree beam spread is built to throw light forward and down out of a horizontally mounted socket, which is how nearly every wall pack is prepped. In a base-up or base-down socket you are not getting the distribution it is built for.
5) What incandescent wattage does the Satco 5/10/20W selectable LED replace?
Set to 5W it replaces a 25W incandescent, 10W replaces 40W, and 20W replaces 60W. Output runs 850 to 3000 lumens across those steps, with 80 CRI and a rated life of 50,000 hours, so for an MRO buyer the relamping interval on an entry or stairwell fixture drops sharply against incandescent or HID.
6) Is the Satco S28928 dimmable, and does it work on a three-way circuit?
Dimmable, and flagged three-way capable. That said, it is a ballast bypass line-voltage lamp on 100 to 277 volts, so any dimming control has to be rated for the line voltage feeding the fixture. On a 277V commercial wall pack circuit a standard residential 120V dimmer is not appropriate.
7) Does the Satco S28928 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. This lamp is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require a DLC listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant, which matters for California energy code work, but a buyer chasing a DLC-based rebate needs a different lamp.
8) How much current does the Satco 20W selectable wall pack lamp draw, and how many can I put on one circuit?
Draw depends on the wattage setting and the supply voltage: 0.050-0.018A at 5W, 0.100-0.036A at 10W, and 0.200-0.072A at 20W, with the higher figure at 120V and the lower at 277V. At 20W on 120V that is 0.2A per lamp, so an electrician sizing a lighting branch circuit can load a large number of fixtures before approaching capacity.
