Satco Lighting S29911 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I drop the Satco S29911 T5 LED into my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
Yes, that is exactly what this lamp is built for. The S29911 is a Type A, ballast-dependent lamp, so it runs off the fixture's existing fluorescent ballast with no rewiring and no ballast bypass. Pull the old T5 tube, put this one in the same miniature bi-pin sockets, and you're done. The trade-off is that you stay dependent on that ballast, so if the ballast fails later the lamp goes dark until it's replaced.
2) Will a 25W T5 LED tube fit the same sockets as my old T5 fluorescent lamps?
It uses a miniature bi-pin base, the same socket type a standard T5 linear fluorescent uses, in a T5 tube diameter. Burning position is universal, so it works in fixtures mounted vertically, horizontally, or at an angle.
3) What color light does the S29911 put out, and will it match the other tubes in my building?
5000K, a cool daylight white, with a CRI of 82. It is not a color-selectable lamp, so you get 5000K only. If the rest of your fixtures are running 3500K or 4000K tubes, mixing in this one will read noticeably bluer in the same space, so plan to relamp a whole room or run at a time.
4) Can this T5 LED tube be used in an enclosed or damp location fixture?
Yes on both counts. The S29911 is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can go in a sealed or gasketed fixture without cooking itself, and it carries a damp location rating. Damp covers covered exteriors, parking garages, and bathrooms. It is not rated for wet locations with direct water exposure.
5) Is the Satco S29911 bright enough to replace a 100W incandescent or a high-output T5?
It puts out 3500 lumens at 25 watts, which Satco rates as a 100W incandescent equivalent. For a shop, corridor, or parking structure that's a solid one-for-one swap on light level while cutting draw. Current runs 0.208 to 0.090A depending on supply voltage, over a 120V to 277V range at 50/60Hz.
6) Is the Satco 25W T5 LED dimmable on my existing dimming system?
The lamp itself is listed as dimmable, but because it is a ballast-dependent Type A lamp, the dimming is controlled by the fluorescent ballast in the fixture, not by the lamp. If you have a dimming T5 ballast on a 0-10V or similar control, you keep dimming. On a non-dimming ballast the lamp will not dim no matter what control you put upstream.
7) How long will these T5 LED tubes last before I have to send a tech back up the ladder?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12 hour a day schedule that's roughly 11 years of service, which is why MRO and property teams favor these on high-ceiling or hard-access fixtures. Keep in mind the ballast is still in the circuit, so ballast life, not lamp life, often decides when the fixture next needs attention.
8) Should I use a Type A ballast-dependent T5 LED or bypass the ballast instead?
Go Type A, like the S29911, when you want the fastest relamp possible: no fixture rewiring, no licensed electrician required for the swap, and the existing ballast stays. Choose a ballast-bypass (Type B) lamp instead when the ballasts in those fixtures are already aging or failing and you would rather take them out of the circuit for good, accepting the rewiring labor and the need to re-label the fixture. For a large installed base of healthy T5 ballasts, Type A is the lower-labor path.
9) How wide does this T5 LED spread light, and is it good for open ceiling areas?
Beam spread is 185 degrees, so it throws light slightly past a flat half-sphere rather than wrapping fully around the tube like a fluorescent does. In a reflector troffer or strip fixture that works in your favor since nearly all the output heads down into the space instead of bouncing off the housing. A gloss lens diffuses the output.
10) What is the Satco S29911 lamp body made of?
Aluminum and glass construction. The aluminum section acts as the heat sink for the LEDs, which is what allows the enclosed-fixture rating, and the glass carries the gloss diffusing lens.
