Satco Lighting S29918 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S29918 8-foot LED tube need the existing fluorescent ballast, or does it get wired direct?
The S29918 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fluorescent ballast comes out and line voltage goes straight to the sockets. It uses double ended wiring, meaning line goes to one end of the fixture and neutral to the other. Plan on removing or disconnecting the ballast before the lamp goes in; a Type B tube left on a live ballast will not run.
2) Is there any safety concern with a ballast bypass tube like this during installation?
Yes, and it changes the work order. Once a fixture is converted for the S29918, line voltage sits at the lampholders, so power has to be off at the breaker during relamping, not just at a local switch. Many facilities require the converted fixture be labeled as ballast bypass so the next tech does not install a fluorescent or Type A lamp into it. Single pin double ended wiring also means orientation at each end matters when the sockets are rewired.
3) What color of light does the 4000K Satco 8-foot LED tube give off, and where does it suit?
4000K is a neutral white, between the yellow cast of 3000K and the blue of 5000K. It is the usual pick for warehouses, parking garages, shop areas, back-of-house corridors and school or hospital service spaces where crews want clean light without it reading cold. If the rest of the building is already on 3500K or 5000K lamps, the S29918 will read noticeably different on the same ceiling.
4) How much light does the S29918 put out compared with the 8-foot fluorescent it replaces?
It draws 40 watts and delivers 5500 lumens. An 8 foot single pin slimline fluorescent typically runs around 60 watts plus ballast draw, so the wattage drop is real, but 5500 lumens is a moderate output for an 8 foot run. On high-bay or high-mounting-height spaces, check the light level you need at the floor before swapping one for one.
5) Is the Satco S29918 DLC listed for utility rebates?
It is listed to DLC 5.1. That is the technical requirement most utility prescriptive rebate programs reference for linear LED replacement lamps, so the lamp is eligible to be claimed where the program accepts DLC qualified product. Rebate amounts and program rules come from the utility, not the lamp.
6) What finish does the S29918 come in, and is there more than one version?
One configuration only, in white. The lamp is ordered as S29918 with no length, color temperature or base variations to specify, so there is no risk of pulling the wrong code once you have confirmed 8 foot single pin and 4000K is what the fixture needs.
