1) Does the Satco S29924 8 foot LED tube need the existing fluorescent ballast, or does it get removed?
The S29924 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the fluorescent ballast comes out of the fixture and line voltage is wired straight to the sockets. Leaving the old ballast in circuit is not how this lamp is meant to run. Plan on rewiring the fixture when you relamp.
2) Is the Satco S29924 single ended or double ended wiring?
Double ended. Line goes to one end of the 8 foot tube and neutral to the other, which means both tombstones stay live-wired rather than shunting everything to one socket. If your fixture is already set up for single ended lamps, the sockets have to be rewired for double ended before this tube will light.
3) Can I put the Satco S29924 in an 8 foot fixture that still has a working fluorescent ballast and no rewiring?
No. That is a Type A (plug and play) application, and the S29924 is Type B ballast bypass. Dropping it into a ballasted socket is not the intended install. If you want a no-rewire relamp, you need a Type A or hybrid Type A/B 8 foot tube with the same recessed double contact base.
4) Is there any safety concern with wiring a ballast bypass LED tube into an existing 8 foot fixture?
With a Type B lamp the sockets carry line voltage once the ballast is removed, and with double ended wiring both ends are energized. Handle it as a line-voltage fixture rewire: kill the circuit at the panel, remove the ballast entirely, and label the fixture as converted so the next person does not drop a fluorescent back in it.
