Satco Lighting S33114 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I just screw the Satco S33114 LED hi-bay lamp into my existing metal halide fixture, or does the ballast have to come out?
The ballast has to come out. The S33114 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means it runs on line voltage direct to the socket, 100V to 277V. You rewire the socket to line voltage and remove or disconnect the existing metal halide ballast. Leaving the ballast in the circuit will damage the lamp. It uses a mogul extended base, so it goes back into a standard mogul socket once the wiring is done.
2) What metal halide wattage does the Satco S33114 replace in a warehouse hi-bay?
It is sold as a 250W to 400W metal halide replacement. Output runs 11,200, 14,000 or 18,200 lumens depending on which of the three wattage settings you pick (80W, 100W or 130W). For a 400W MH fixture, use the 130W/18,200 lumen setting; the lower settings suit 250W to 320W retrofits or lower mounting heights where the full output would be too much glare.
3) Will this Satco hi-bay LED work in an enclosed fixture or a wet parking garage?
Enclosed fixtures are fine. The S33114 carries an enclosure rating of Both, meaning open or enclosed luminaires, and it is rated for indoor or outdoor use in damp locations. Damp, not wet, so a covered garage deck, canopy or loading dock is in scope; direct rain or a hose-down wet location is not.
4) Is this lamp dimmable or compatible with occupancy sensors that dim?
No, the S33114 is not dimmable. On a dimming control it will flicker, buzz or fail. It will work with a straight on/off occupancy sensor or relay, but any 0-10V or phase-dimming scheme needs a different lamp or a dedicated LED hi-bay luminaire. Note that it is flagged three-way, which refers to the selectable wattage steps, not to dimming.
5) Does the Satco S33114 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
It is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify for the utility rebate programs that require a DLC listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If the rebate is driving the project, specify a DLC-listed hi-bay luminaire instead of a lamp retrofit.
6) Does the S33114 work on 208V or 480V three-phase lighting circuits?
It runs on any line voltage from 100V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so 120V, 208V, 240V and 277V circuits are all fine with no change of lamp or driver. 480V is out of range and will destroy it; those fixtures need a step-down transformer or a 480V rated luminaire.
7) How do you set the wattage on a selectable LED hi-bay lamp like this one?
Wattage is set on the lamp itself, not at the driver or the switch, and it is chosen once at install. The S33114 offers 80W, 100W and 130W, drawing 0.800-0.289A, 1.000-0.361A and 1.300-0.469A respectively across the 100-277V range (lower current at higher line voltage). Pick the setting before you put the lamp up; it is not a dimmable lamp and it is not adjustable from a wall control.
8) Can the S33114 be mounted base-up in a hi-bay, or does it have to hang down?
Any orientation. Burning position is universal, so base-up in a shoebox or hi-bay reflector, base-down in a pendant, or horizontal in a wall pack all work. The 120 degree beam spread gives a wide distribution, which is what you want in an aisle or open floor rather than a tight spot.
9) Will the 4000K color match the other LED lamps already in my building?
The S33114 is fixed at 4000K neutral white with 80 CRI. It is not a CCT selectable lamp, so there is no field switch to take it to 3000K or 5000K. If your existing retrofits are 5000K, this lamp will read noticeably warmer alongside them, and in a large open space that difference is visible. Standardize the whole room on one CCT.
10) Will my old mogul socket hold the weight of this LED hi-bay lamp?
The lamp weighs 2.7 lb, which is far heavier than the metal halide lamp it replaces, and the body is aluminum and plastic. In a base-down pendant check that the existing porcelain mogul socket and its mounting are sound before you hang it. Brittle or cracked sockets in 20 year old hi-bays should be replaced during the retrofit anyway, since you are rewiring the socket to line voltage for the ballast bypass.
