Satco Lighting S33116 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S33116 LED high bay lamp work with my existing metal halide ballast?
No. The S33116 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means it runs on line voltage direct to the socket. The existing magnetic or electronic HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and the socket wired straight to 100V-277V, 50/60Hz power. If you leave the ballast in the circuit the lamp will not operate correctly.
2) How do I pick between the 100W, 120W and 150W settings on this Satco wattage selectable high bay lamp?
Pick by the output you need to match what you are removing. The three settings deliver 14,000, 16,800 and 21,000 lumens, drawing 100W, 120W or 150W. Satco rates the lamp as a 400W to 600W metal halide replacement, so the 150W/21,000 lumen setting is the one to use where a 600W MH was running, and the lower settings where a 400W was. The selector is set on the lamp before install, not switched from the wall.
3) Can I put the S33116 high bay LED on a dimmer?
No. The S33116 is non-dimmable. Wattage selection on the lamp is the only output adjustment. If you need dimming or occupancy-based trim, you need a dimmable fixture-level solution rather than a retrofit lamp.
4) Can this LED high bay lamp be used outdoors or in a wet location like a parking canopy?
It is rated for damp locations, indoor or outdoor. That covers covered canopies, warehouses, loading docks and similar sheltered spots. It is not a wet location lamp, so do not use it anywhere exposed to direct rain or hose-down washdown.
5) Can the Satco S33116 be installed in an enclosed fixture?
Yes, the enclosure rating covers both open and enclosed fixtures, so an acrylic or glass-lensed high bay or a wallpack housing is acceptable. The lamp has an aluminum and plastic body for heat dissipation and will run in any burning position.
6) Is the 4000K color on the S33116 field adjustable, and how does it look?
The color is fixed at 4000K, a neutral white. CCT is not selectable on this lamp, so if you are relamping a building and want all the bays to match, every lamp will land at the same 4000K. Color rendering is 80 CRI.
7) What current draw should I figure for a circuit full of these LED high bay lamps?
Draw depends on the wattage setting and the supply voltage: 1.000A to 0.361A at the 100W setting, 1.200A to 0.433A at 120W, and 1.500A to 0.542A at 150W, with the higher figure at the low end of the 100V-277V range and the lower figure at 277V. Use the 277V numbers when loading a 277V branch circuit and the 120V numbers for a 120V lighting panel.
8) Does the Satco S33116 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. It is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify under rebate programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and Title 24 compliant, which matters for California installs.
9) What kind of light spread does this high bay lamp give, and what mounting height suits it?
A 120 degree beam spread, which is a wide area wash rather than a narrow aisle throw. That works well in open warehouse bays, gyms and shop floors. If you are lighting tall narrow racking and want the light held in the aisle, a narrower optic high bay fixture will hold the footcandles better than a wide 120 degree lamp.
10) How long does this LED high bay lamp last compared to the metal halide it replaces?
Rated for 50,000 average hours. For a facility running 12 hours a day that is roughly 11 years of service, which is the main reason crews retrofit high bays that need a lift truck to reach. Keep in mind the ballast bypass wiring is a one-time electrical change at each fixture.
11) How heavy is the S33116, and will my old high bay socket hold it?
The lamp weighs 2.92 lb. That is heavier than the HID lamp coming out, so on an older porcelain mogul socket with a tired mounting bracket, check the socket is sound and the fixture can carry the weight in the burning position you are using before you lift it into place.
