Satco Lighting S49672 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S49672 LED corncob need the existing HID ballast removed?
Yes. The S49672 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing magnetic or electronic HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired direct to the medium base socket. It runs on 100V-277V at 50/60Hz, which covers most commercial line voltages, but it will not operate if you leave the ballast in the circuit. That makes this an electrician's task, not a lamp swap a maintenance tech does off a ladder without touching the fixture wiring.
2) Can I put this LED corncob in an enclosed fixture like a wall pack or acorn post top?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so it can be installed in a sealed or gasketed fixture without voiding its thermal rating. It also burns in any orientation, base up, base down or horizontal, which matters in post tops and shoebox heads where the socket points up.
3) Is this Satco LED HID lamp rated for outdoor use in the rain?
It is damp location rated and listed for indoor or outdoor use. Damp means it can go in a covered outdoor spot, a soffit, a parking garage or an enclosed outdoor fixture that keeps direct water off it. It is not a wet location lamp, so do not put it in an open fixture where rain hits the lamp directly.
4) What HID lamp does a 36W 4680 lumen LED corncob actually replace?
At 36 watts and 4680 lumens, the S49672 is sized for the low end of the HID range, roughly where a 70W to 100W metal halide or HPS lamp lands after it has depreciated. Satco rates it as a 125W incandescent equivalent. If you are relamping 250W or 400W HID heads, this one will leave the space noticeably darker and you want a higher wattage corncob instead.
5) Is 2700K too warm for a parking lot or warehouse?
2700K is warm white, the color of an incandescent lamp, and it is closer to the look of high pressure sodium than to metal halide. For hospitality, multi-family common areas, courtyards and anywhere you want a soft amber cast, that is the point. For a warehouse, shop or parking lot where crews expect crisp white light, 4000K or 5000K reads better. The color is fixed, not field selectable, so pick the temperature at order time. CRI is 80.
6) Does this Satco LED corncob qualify for California Title 24 or a DLC utility rebate?
Title 24 compliant, yes. DLC listed, no, so it will not qualify for utility rebate programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. Specifiers on California projects can use it; anyone building a rebate package around DLC needs a different lamp. It is FCC compliant for electromagnetic interference.
7) Can the Satco S49672 be put on a dimmer or photocell circuit?
Dimming is out, the lamp is not dimmable and will flicker or fail on a dimmer. A line voltage photocell that switches the circuit fully on and off is a different matter and does not conflict with anything in the lamp's ratings. It is also not a three-way lamp.
8) How long before I am back up the ladder relamping these?
Rated life is 35,000 hours. On a dusk to dawn schedule of roughly 4,200 hours a year that is about eight years of service, which is the real argument for a bypass retrofit in high fixtures, since you also delete the ballast as a failure point. Draw is 0.360A down to 0.130A depending on where in the 100V-277V range you land, so on 277V circuits you can put more lamps on a breaker than the old HID load allowed.
9) Should I use a Type B bypass lamp or a Type A plug-and-play for my HID relamp?
Type B, which is what the S49672 is, means removing the ballast and wiring line voltage to the socket. More labor at install, but you stop paying for ballast losses and you remove the component most likely to fail next. Type A drops in on the existing ballast with no rewiring, which is faster on a one-off relamp but leaves an aging ballast in the fixture and limits you to what that ballast will drive. For a property manager relamping a whole site at once with an electrician on hand, bypass is usually the right call.
10) What is the S49672 built from, and will the housing show inside a clear fixture?
The body is aluminum with polycarbonate, the lens is clear polycarbonate, and the housing is white. In a clear globe or an open post top the white body is visible, so if you are matching the look across a row of fixtures on a property, order all of them the same rather than mixing in lamps with a different housing color. The aluminum body is the heat sink, which is part of why the lamp carries an enclosed rating.
