1) Does the Satco S49739 LED HID replacement need the existing ballast removed?
Yes. The S49739 is a Type B, ballast bypass lamp, which means it runs on line voltage direct to the socket. The existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and the socket wired directly before the lamp goes in. If you leave the ballast in circuit, the lamp will not operate correctly.
2) What color light does the Satco S49739 put out, and will it match other 5000K fixtures in my building?
5000K, a cool daylight white, with 80 CRI color rendering. It will match other 5000K lamps in a warehouse, parking garage, or shop bay. Put next to 4000K or 3000K lamps on the same ceiling, the difference is visible, so standardize a run on one color temperature.
3) Is 45 watts enough to replace the HID lamp I have now?
The S49739 is sold as a 45 watt LED HID replacement, so it is intended to take the place of a metal halide or high pressure sodium lamp of much higher input wattage while drawing 45 watts at the socket. Match it to the fixture by the light level you need, not by comparing wattage to wattage.
4) Is 80 CRI good enough for a warehouse or garage retrofit?
80 CRI is the normal grade for general industrial and area lighting, and the S49739 is built to it. It is fine for aisles, loading areas, parking structures, and shop space. For color-critical work such as paint matching or retail display of merchandise, specify a 90+ CRI lamp instead.
