Satco Lighting S8536 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S8536 LED PL lamp need the existing fluorescent ballast, or does it bypass it?
The S8536 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing CFL ballast has to be removed and the sockets wired directly to line voltage. Leaving the old ballast in circuit will not work with it. If you want a lamp that drops into the existing socket with the ballast left in place, you need a Type A (ballast compatible) PL lamp instead.
2) Will a G24d 2-pin LED PL lamp fit a 4-pin G24q socket?
No. The S8536 has a 2-pin G24d base, which will not seat in a 4-pin G24q socket. G24d sockets were originally used with magnetic-ballast twin tube CFLs; if your fixture takes a 4-pin lamp you need a G24q based PL replacement. Since this one is a ballast bypass lamp, the socket is being rewired to line voltage anyway, so match the base type to what is physically in the fixture.
3) What do I need to do at the fixture before installing a Type B ballast bypass PL lamp?
The ballast comes out and the G24d socket gets wired direct to line voltage, following the lamp's wiring instruction for which pins take line and neutral. That is electrical work on the fixture, not a lamp swap, so most property managers hand it to a licensed electrician. Once it is done the fixture is dedicated to bypass lamps, and a standard CFL put back in that socket will fail.
4) Does the S8536 have to be mounted vertically, or can it go in a horizontal fixture?
It is specified as a vertical burn position lamp. In a horizontally mounted PL socket, such as a wall sconce or some under-cabinet housings, use a PL lamp rated for horizontal orientation instead. Vertical PL lamps put their light down the axis of the tube, which is what a downlight or recessed can needs.
5) How much light does the 9W Satco S8536 put out compared to the CFL it replaces?
950 lumens at 9 watts, with a 120 degree beam angle. That output sits in the range of a 26 watt twin tube CFL, so in a recessed can or stairwell fixture you get comparable light at roughly a third of the draw. The wide 120 degree spread is aimed at general downlighting rather than a tight spot.
6) Is 3000K going to match the other bulbs in my building, or will it look yellow?
3000K is a warm white, noticeably warmer than the 3500K and 4000K neutral tones common in commercial corridors and offices, and warmer still than 5000K daylight. If you are relamping a mixed property, 3000K reads closest to the older warm CFL and incandescent look, which makes it a common pick for lobbies, hospitality, and multi-family common areas. For a uniform result, relamp a whole space at one color temperature rather than mixing.
7) What is the rated life on the Satco S8536 PL lamp?
50,000 average rated hours. For an MRO or property maintenance schedule, a fixture burning 12 hours a day works out to roughly 11 years of service, which is the main argument for taking the labor hit of rewiring the socket for ballast bypass once instead of replacing CFLs and failed ballasts repeatedly.
8) What finish does the Satco S8536 come in, and is there more than one option?
One configuration only, in a frost finish. The frosted diffuser softens the LED sources so you do not see individual diodes through an open trim or a clear lens. There are no other finish or color temperature choices under part number S8536; other outputs and colors are separate Satco part numbers.
