Satco Lighting S9636 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Satco S9636 BR40 be used in a sealed or fully enclosed recessed can?
No. The S9636 is an open rated lamp, so it needs a recessed housing or fixture that breathes. Dropping it into a fully enclosed or airtight sealed fixture traps heat around the driver and shortens the life well before the 25,000 hour rating. For enclosed cans you need a lamp specifically marked enclosed rated.
2) Can this BR40 go in a covered porch, bathroom, or shower can?
Damp location rated and listed for indoor use, so covered entries, bathrooms and kitchens are fine. It is not wet rated, so keep it out of open weather, direct spray, and shower trims that call for a wet location lamp. Burning position is universal, so base up in a recessed can is no problem.
3) Will the Satco S9636 work on my existing wall dimmers?
The S9636 is dimmable, but it is a line-voltage 120V LED lamp, so performance depends on the dimmer. Older incandescent dimmers with high minimum loads can cause flicker or drop-out at the bottom of the range when only a couple of 11.5W lamps are on the circuit. LED-rated forward or reverse phase dimmers are the safer pairing. Note it is not a three-way lamp, so it will not step through levels in a three-way socket.
4) How many of these can I put on one 15 amp circuit in an apartment build-out?
Each S9636 draws 0.096A at 120V, 60Hz, so the lamp load is negligible compared to older 65W BR40 floods. Size the circuit to your dimmer and control gear rather than the lamps, and check the dimmer's minimum load, since LED lamps this small often fall under the low end of older incandescent dimmers.
5) Is 4000K too cool for apartment living rooms, or should I use a warmer BR40?
4000K is neutral white, and it reads clean and commercial rather than cozy. It suits corridors, laundry rooms, kitchens, retail and office areas. For unit interiors and hospitality spaces where tenants expect warm light, spec a 2700K or 3000K BR40 instead. The S9636 is fixed at 4000K, it is not a color-selectable lamp, so you cannot field-adjust it.
6) Does this Satco BR40 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S9636 is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify under programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. If the rebate drives the job, pick a lamp carrying a current DLC listing.
7) Is 80 CRI good enough for a retail or office space?
At 80 CRI, the S9636 is standard for general and commercial lighting: corridors, offices, back of house, common areas. Where color judgment matters, such as apparel retail, paint or fabric display, or healthcare exam areas, step up to a 90+ CRI lamp. Paired with the 4000K neutral output, 80 CRI reads clean and consistent across a room full of the same lamp.
8) Will this lamp interfere with tenant Wi-Fi or radios?
The S9636 is FCC compliant, so its driver electronics meet the emissions limits. That matters in multi-family and hospitality retrofits where dozens of cheap LED drivers on one panel can buzz AM radio and other equipment.
9) What does this BR40 look like in the can, gray or white?
The lamp has a gray housing with a frosted lens over the LED. In a recessed trim the gray body is largely hidden, and the frosted lens is what you see from below, giving a diffuse face rather than visible LED dots.
