Satco Lighting S9638 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I put the Satco S9638 LED BR40 in an airtight or insulation-contact recessed housing?
No. The S9638 is an open rated lamp, which means it needs an open, ventilated fixture and should not go into a fully enclosed or airtight housing. Heat trapped in a sealed can shortens LED life. For sealed or IC-rated airtight housings, specify a lamp that carries an enclosed fixture rating.
2) Can I use the Satco S9638 BR40 in a bathroom, covered porch, or laundry room?
Damp location rated and listed for indoor use, so the S9638 is fine in a bathroom, over a shower in a vented can, or in a laundry room. A covered exterior porch is a wet or damp call depending on exposure; if rain or snow can reach the fixture, that is a wet location and this lamp is not the one for it.
3) Will the Satco S9638 dim smoothly on my existing dimmer, and is it a three-way bulb?
The S9638 is dimmable, but it is not a three-way lamp, so it will not step through levels in a three-way socket. On a dimmer, LED lamps want an LED-rated dimmer rather than an old incandescent leading-edge unit; at 16.5W a single bulb also sits below the minimum load some legacy dimmers need to run without flicker.
4) Can I buy the Satco S9638 for a job in California?
No. The S9638 is non-compliant under California Title 20, so it cannot be specified for a California installation. Satco lists the S9615 as the Title 20 alternate substitute for it.
5) Is 2700K too warm for a commercial space, or does it match my existing bulbs?
2700K is warm white, the same tone as the incandescent lamps it replaces, so it matches residential, hospitality, and multi-family common areas. It will look noticeably yellow next to 3000K or 4000K fixtures. CRI is 80, which is standard for general area lighting but short of what a retail display or color-critical space wants.
6) Does the Satco S9638 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S9638 is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. If a rebate is driving the spec, that requirement has to be checked before the lamp is selected.
7) Can the Satco S9638 BR40 be installed base up in a can or does it have to point down?
Burning position is universal, so the S9638 can run base up in a recessed can, base down in a pendant or open shade, or horizontal in a wall-mount fixture with no effect on rated life.
8) How long will the Satco S9638 last before maintenance has to relamp?
Rated 25,000 hours. On a common area burning 12 hours a day that is roughly 5.7 years between relamps, which is why property managers move BR40 sockets to LED even where the incandescent still works. Keeping the lamps in open, ventilated cans matters, since this one is open rated.
9) Is the Satco S9638 a clear or frosted BR40, and will you see the LED diodes?
Frosted. The S9638 has a frost lens over the emitters and a gray housing, so looking up into the can you see a diffused face rather than individual diodes. That matters in open downlights and any fixture where the lamp is visible from below.
