Satco Lighting S9678 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I screw the Satco S9678 amber corncob LED into an existing HID fixture that still has its ballast?
No. The S9678 is a ballast bypass lamp, direct wire only on 100V to 277V. The existing HID ballast has to be removed or wired around before the lamp goes in the medium base socket. Leave the ballast in the circuit and the lamp will not run correctly.
2) Will an 18W LED corncob actually replace the 70W lamp I have now?
The S9678 draws 18 watts and is rated as a 70W incandescent equivalent, putting out 1100 lumens at 80+ CRI. Keep in mind this one is amber 585nm, so it is not a white-light swap. Output is 300 degree beam spread, so it throws close to all the way around the lamp.
3) Why would I specify an amber 585nm LED lamp instead of a normal white one?
The 585nm amber output is a narrow yellow wavelength used where white light is a problem: sea turtle nesting zones, dark sky and coastal lighting ordinances, insect-sensitive areas, and bug-light style exterior applications. If you want general white illumination for a parking garage or warehouse, pick a standard color temperature corncob instead of the S9678.
4) Can this Satco amber corncob go in an enclosed fixture, like an acorn or a wall pack?
Yes, the S9678 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed globe or lens does not void it. It also burns in any orientation, base up, base down or horizontal. Location rating is damp, meaning covered outdoor or humid interior locations, not direct exposure to rain or standing water.
5) Will this amber LED bulb work on a dimmer or a photocell-switched circuit?
Not on a dimmer. The S9678 is non-dimmable and is not a three-way lamp, so it needs a straight on/off supply. Standard photocell or timeclock switching at full line voltage is fine, since the lamp accepts 100V to 277V at 50-60Hz.
6) Does the same amber corncob lamp work on both 120V and 277V circuits in my building?
One part number covers both. The S9678 runs anywhere from 100V to 277V, drawing 0.180A at the low end of that range down to 0.065A at the high end. That means the same stock item can go on 120V house circuits and 277V commercial lighting branches, which simplifies standardizing across a property.
7) Is the Satco S9678 DLC listed for utility rebates?
No, the S9678 is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify for rebate programs that require a DLC listing. It is FCC compliant and Title 24 compliant.
8) How long does this LED HID replacement lamp last compared to the HID it replaces?
Average rated life on the S9678 is 50,000 hours. Running dusk to dawn, that is roughly a decade of service, which is the main reason maintenance crews go to a direct wire corncob rather than re-lamping HID on a ladder every year or two.
9) What is the S9678 corncob lamp actually made of, and what does it look like installed?
It is a corncob shaped LED lamp with a white and grey housing, an aluminum and plastic base, and a clear lens over the diodes. The amber color comes from the LEDs themselves, not a tinted glass envelope, so the lamp reads clear when off.
