Satco Lighting S9856 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S9856 LED PL lamp need the existing ballast, or do I have to rewire the fixture?
Keep the ballast. The S9856 is a Type A, ballast-dependent lamp: it runs off the existing CFL ballast with no rewiring, so it drops straight into the socket. If the ballast has failed, the lamp won't light, and a ballast-bypass (Type B) lamp would be the direction to go instead.
2) Will a G24d 2-pin LED PL lamp fit my 4-pin G24q socket?
No. The S9856 has a G24d 2-pin base, which only seats in 2-pin G24d sockets (the magnetic-ballast style). A 4-pin G24q socket is keyed differently and needs a 4-pin lamp. Check the pins on the lamp you are pulling out before ordering.
3) Can I put this PL LED lamp on a dimmer?
No. The S9856 is non-dimmable. On a dimming circuit expect flicker, buzz, or no start at all. Wire it to a straight on/off switch or occupancy sensor and leave the dimmer out of the circuit.
4) Is this LED PL lamp safe in a fully enclosed fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed-rated lamp, so sealed vapor-tight and closed-lens fixtures are fine. It is also damp location rated, which covers covered walkways, bathrooms and stairwells, but not direct wet exposure.
5) Does the S9856 have to be mounted horizontally?
Yes, the burning position is horizontal. That suits the typical PL downlight or wall-mount fixture where the lamp lies flat across the can. If your fixture holds the lamp base-up or base-down vertically, this is not the right lamp for it.
6) What CFL wattage does the 9W Satco S9856 replace in a downlight?
At 9 watts it puts out 900 lumens, rated equivalent to a 40W incandescent. In practice it is the swap for the common 2-pin PL compact fluorescent lamps in recessed cans, wall sconces and stairwell fixtures, at roughly a third of the energy draw.
7) Will 4000K match the other bulbs in my building's common areas?
4000K is neutral white, a middle tone between warm 3000K residential light and cool 5000K. It matches most commercial corridor, garage and stairwell lamping. Color rendering is 82 CRI, and the color temperature is fixed, not field selectable, so every lamp in a run will read the same.
8) Does the Satco S9856 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. This lamp is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify under utility programs that require DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and is lawful for sale in California.
9) How wide is the light spread from this PL lamp, and will it look hot-spotted?
Beam spread is 120 degrees, a broad wash rather than a spot, and the lens is frosted, so the output is diffused instead of showing individual diodes. That is what you want in a downlight or sconce where the lamp is partly visible.
10) How long before I have to relamp these again?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12-hour daily common-area schedule that is over eleven years of service, which is the main argument for converting PL sockets off compact fluorescent in a building where relamping means a lift or a ladder.
