Satco Lighting S9855 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S9855 LED PL lamp need the existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to bypass it?
Keep the ballast. The S9855 is a Type A, ballast dependent lamp, so it runs off the existing CFL ballast with no rewiring. Pull the old 2-pin CFL, drop this one in the same socket. If the ballast has failed, this lamp will not light, and no amount of rewiring helps unless you move to a ballast bypass (Type B) lamp instead.
2) Will a G24d 2-pin LED PL lamp fit a G24q 4-pin socket?
No. The S9855 has a G24d (2-pin) base and only seats in a 2-pin G24d socket. Four-pin G24q fixtures use a different pin arrangement and a different ballast type, so you need a 4-pin lamp for those. Count the pins on the lamp you are pulling out before you order a case.
3) Can I use this LED PL lamp in an enclosed fixture or a damp bathroom?
Both are fine. The S9855 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed glass or lensed fixture will not void its rating, and it carries a damp location rating for bathrooms, covered walkways and similar. Damp is not wet: do not use it where it takes direct water.
4) Can the Satco 9W LED PL be installed base-up in a downlight, or does it have to lie horizontal?
Burning position is horizontal. That suits the sconces, stairwell cans and under-cabinet fixtures where 2-pin CFLs usually sit sideways. If your fixture holds the lamp vertically, this is not the one to spec.
5) Is this 9W LED PL lamp dimmable on my existing dimmer circuit?
It is not dimmable. The S9855 runs at a fixed 9W output of 850 lumens, and putting it on a dimmed circuit risks flicker or early failure. For dimmed areas, spec a lamp rated dimmable on the ballast type you have.
6) What CFL wattage does the Satco S9855 replace, and will the light level match?
At 9 watts it puts out 850 lumens with a 120 degree beam spread, which is the broad, general-purpose distribution a 2-pin CFL gives. Satco rates it at a 40W incandescent equivalent. In practice you are swapping a low-wattage 2-pin CFL and cutting connected load while keeping the same socket and ballast.
7) Does this Satco LED PL qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S9855 is not DLC approved, so it will not clear a utility program that requires a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and lawful for sale in California.
8) How long before I have to relamp these again?
Average rated life is 50,000 hours. On a stairwell or corridor running roughly 12 hours a day that is over a decade of service, which is the argument for the swap on a large multi-family or institutional relamp. Bear in mind the ballast stays in the circuit and remains the wear item.
9) Is the Satco S9855 a clear lamp or diffused?
Diffused. It is lensed with a frost finish over a white housing, so it softens the LED sources rather than showing individual diodes. That matters in open or decorative fixtures where the lamp is visible. Base is aluminum and plastic.
