Satco Lighting S9862 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S9862 LED PL lamp need the existing fluorescent ballast, or do I have to bypass it?
The S9862 is a ballast-dependent (Type A) lamp, so it runs off the existing CFL ballast and the fixture stays wired as-is. No rewiring, no ballast bypass. The flip side: if the ballast fails, the lamp goes dark until the ballast is replaced or the fixture is converted to a direct-wire lamp.
2) Will a G24d 2-pin LED PL lamp fit my 4-pin CFL socket?
No. The S9862 has a G24d 2-pin base and only seats in a G24d two-pin socket. Four-pin sockets (G24q) use a different keying and take a 4-pin lamp. Check the pins on the lamp you are pulling out before ordering quantity.
3) Can I put this LED PL lamp on a dimmer?
No. The S9862 is not dimmable. On a dimming circuit you will get flicker, buzz, or no start at all. For a switched-only circuit it is fine, and it is not a three-way lamp either.
4) Can the Satco S9862 go in a closed fixture or an outdoor wall pack?
Enclosed fixtures are fine, the lamp is enclosed rated. Location rating is damp, so covered exteriors, breezeways, parking garages and bathrooms are in scope. Do not use it in a wet location where the lamp takes direct rain or hose spray.
5) What CFL wattage does the 9W Satco S9862 LED PL replace?
At 9 watts it puts out 850 lumens, which is the output range of a 13W 2-pin CFL, and Satco lists it as a 40W incandescent equivalent. Color is 3000K warm white with 82 CRI, so it reads warmer than a 4000K lamp if you are mixing it into a building where other fixtures are neutral white.
6) Can this PL lamp be installed base up in a downlight?
Yes, either orientation. The S9862 is rated for base up or base down burning position, so it works in recessed cans, ceiling-mount CFL downlights and horizontal sconces alike. The frosted lens and 120 degree beam spread give a wide wash rather than a tight spot.
7) Does the Satco S9862 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S9862 is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify on utility programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. If the rebate is driving the retrofit, you need a DLC-qualified lamp or a full fixture conversion instead.
8) How long does this 9W LED PL last compared to the CFL it replaces?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12-hour-a-day corridor or stairwell that is roughly eleven years of service, which is why these get spec'd for hard-to-reach fixtures where relamping labor costs more than the lamp. It runs at 60Hz line frequency through the existing ballast.
9) Is the 3000K on the Satco S9862 switchable to another color temperature?
No, it is fixed at 3000K. The lamp is not CCT selectable, so if you are standardizing a building on 3500K or 4000K you need to order that color temperature as a separate part number rather than field-adjusting this one.
