Satco Lighting S9864 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to remove the existing ballast to use the Satco S9864 LED PL lamp?
No, and in fact you can't. The S9864 is a ballast-dependent (Type A) lamp, meaning it runs off the existing CFL ballast in the fixture. Leave the ballast in place and the lamp drops into the socket. If your fixture's ballast has failed or you intend to bypass it, this is the wrong lamp for the job.
2) Will a G24d 2-pin LED PL lamp fit my 4-pin CFL socket?
No. The S9864 has a G24d 2-pin base, which only seats in a 2-pin G24d socket. Four-pin fixtures use G24q bases and the pin arrangement will not mate. Check the existing lamp: if it has four pins, you need a 4-pin version instead.
3) Can I put this LED PL lamp on a dimmer?
No. The S9864 is not dimmable. On a dimming circuit expect flicker, buzz, or no start at all. For dimmed spaces, keep the circuit at full line voltage or choose a fixture-level LED retrofit rated for dimming.
4) Is the Satco S9864 safe to use in an enclosed ceiling fixture?
Yes, it's an enclosed-rated lamp, so a closed drum, jar, or lensed downlight is fine. It also carries a damp location rating, which covers covered exterior soffits, breezeways, and bathrooms. It is not rated for wet locations where water can hit the lamp directly.
5) What CFL wattage does the Satco S9864 replace in a PL fixture?
It draws 9 watts and puts out 900 lumens, which covers the common 13W 2-pin CFL output range in a PL downlight or wall sconce. Satco rates it as a 40W incandescent equivalent. If your existing lamp is an 18W or 26W CFL, expect less light from this one.
6) Can this PL lamp be installed base up, or does it have to hang base down?
Either way. The S9864 is rated for base up or base down burning position, so it works in a recessed can, a surface ceiling fixture, or a horizontal wall sconce without affecting rated life.
7) Will 4000K match the other lamps in my building, and how does it look?
4000K is neutral white, cooler and cleaner-looking than the 2700K to 3000K warm white common in residential corridors and hospitality. It's the usual choice for offices, stairwells, garages, and back-of-house. The color temperature is fixed, not field selectable, so if your other openings are 3000K this lamp will read noticeably bluer next to them. CRI is 82.
8) Does the Satco S9864 qualify for a DLC utility rebate?
No. The S9864 is not DLC listed, so it won't qualify for utility programs that require DesignLights Consortium listing. If a rebate is driving the spec, you'll need a DLC-qualified product. The lamp is FCC compliant and lawful for sale in California.
9) How long will these last before maintenance has to change them again?
Rated at 50,000 average hours. On a 12-hour-a-day corridor schedule that's over 11 years of service, which is the main reason facilities swap 2-pin CFLs for these rather than restocking CFL tubes. Keep in mind the fixture ballast still has to survive, since the lamp depends on it.
10) Is the light spread wide enough for a recessed PL downlight?
Yes. The beam spread is 120 degrees with a frosted lens, so it throws a broad, diffused wash rather than a spot. That suits general ambient lighting in corridors, restrooms, and lobbies. For accent or task aiming you want a directional lamp instead.
11) What is the lamp body made of and what color is it?
The base and housing are aluminum and plastic with a white housing and a frosted lens. The aluminum section acts as the heat sink, which is why the lamp tolerates enclosed fixtures.
