1) Will the Schlage AL53 fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Yes on both counts. The AL53 covers 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors as standard, with 2 inch available as an option, so 1-3/4 sits mid-range. Backset is 2-3/4 inches standard, and 2-3/8, 3-3/4 and 5 inch backsets can be ordered if your existing prep is different. Boring a new door, ask for 2-3/4 unless the holes in the door say otherwise.
2) What does the AL53 entrance function do when you push the button?
Push or turn the inside button and the outside lever locks. It stays locked until a key is turned in the outside cylinder or the inside turn is rotated to release it. The button acts on the outside lever only, so the inside lever keeps working. That is ANSI/BHMA A156.2 function F76, the usual pick for an office, tenant suite or apartment entry where someone wants to secure the door from inside without pulling out keys.
3) Does the Schlage AL53 less cylinder come with a cylinder and keys?
No cylinder and no keys in the box. The less cylinder AL53 is supplied for you to fit your own conventional cylinder, which is what you want when the building is already on an established key system and the lock has to join it. 4) Can a Schlage AL53 go on a 3 hour fire rated door?
UL Listed for 3 hour fire doors, and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 as an F76 entrance function, so the AL53 belongs on a rated opening. One thing to watch when you spec the latch front: the standard 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch square corner beveled front and the 1 inch square corner and 1 inch radius corner options are fine, but the drive-in / round face front is non-UL and must not go on a rated door.
5) Is the Schlage AL53 handed, or does one lock work on left and right hand doors?
Non-handed and field reversible, so a single AL53 covers both left and right hand openings. For anyone stocking spares across a building, that means one part number on the shelf instead of splitting the order by hand, and no wrong-hand returns from the field.

Exposed trim is wrought brass and bronze, with the Neptune levers pressure cast zinc plated to match. Finishes are 622 black matte and 626 satin chrome, both of which hold up better on a high-touch door than a lacquered brass.
8) I want a keyed Grade 2 entrance lever that already has the cylinder in it. What else is there?

9) Is Grade 2 enough for a school or hospital corridor, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 heavy duty, which is what the AL53 is, suits most tenant, office and apartment entry doors. Where a facility standard calls out Grade 1, the Dexter C1000 Series entry/office cylindrical lever is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. 10) I need the outside lever locked at all times with no pushbutton for staff to leave open. Is the AL53 the wrong function?
It is. The Schlage AL53 is an entrance function: the turn or push button locks the outside lever until it is unlocked with a key or by rotating the inside turn, which means an occupant can leave it unlocked. For an opening that must stay secured, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked and key access only, with no button to defeat it.
11) I need non-locking levers on the interior doors to go with keyed entry levers. What should I order?
Passage sets, and be careful not to buy a dummy by mistake: a dummy such as the BEST 7KC single dummy trim or the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy has no latch in it at all and only serves as a pull. For a working non-locking latch in the same Grade 2 commercial class as the AL53, the Falcon B101 passage lever or the Arrow GL01 Sierra lever passage set will do it, the GL01 fitting 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Lever profile will not match the Neptune.
12) Can the Schlage AL53 be tied into a card reader or run as a keypad lock?
The AL53 operates mechanically, by key at the outside cylinder or by the inside turn and button. Where the opening has to release from an access control panel or reader, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is an electrified fail safe cylindrical lever, Grade 1, 12VAC/DC, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
