Schlage ND92 Grade 1 Entrance Vandlgard, Cylindrical Lock, Rhodes Lever, Key in Lever, Less Cylinder, 2-3/4" Backset

Schlage Lock Company ND Series

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

Features:

  • No access with minimum 3,100 in-lbs of lever torque (2.6x BHMA, for general abuse)
  • No access with minimum 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA, for pry-bar attacks)
  • No access with minimum 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA, for sledgehammer attacks)

Schlage ND92-LD-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Schlage ND92 and the ND53, and between ND92 and ND91?
ND92 and ND53 are both ANSI F109 entrance locks with a push/turn button inside and a key cylinder outside, and they operate identically. The difference is Vandlgard: the ND92 lets the outside lever spin free when locked so abuse does not load the chassis, the ND53 keeps the outside lever rigid. Against the ND91, the difference is the button. ND91 is ANSI F82 with a plain push button, which always releases when the door closes or the inside lever turns. The ND92 push/turn button can be set to stay locked, which is what you want where staff need the door to stay secured behind them.
2) How do I lock and unlock a Schlage ND92 from the inside, and can it lock me out?
Two ways to lock it. Push the inside button and the outside lever goes inoperative, but the next key turn outside or a rotation of the inside lever retracts the latch and pops the button back out, unlocking it. Push AND turn the button and it stays locked: turning the inside lever retracts the latch to get out but leaves the outside lever locked until you rotate the button back to its start position. That second mode is exactly where lock-outs happen. Leaving the room without fully releasing a push/turn button can lock you out. The key outside never locks the lock, it only retracts the latch and releases the button.
3) Do I need to order a cylinder separately with the ND92, and what keyways will it take?
Depends which version you pick. Cylinder choices are J (Schlage full size interchangeable core, FSIC) or L (less conventional cylinder), both in 626 satin chrome. The L version ships without a cylinder, so you supply one. The ND series accepts conventional 6-pin, FSIC, SFIC and 7-pin SL formats, plus less-cylinder builds made to fit non-Schlage cylinders from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale. Standard Schlage keying is the patented 6-pin Everest 29 S123 keyway; open, restricted, Primus, master keying and construction keying are also available.
4) What is the closest Grade 1 alternative to the Schlage ND92 entrance lever for an opening that only needs a straight keyed entry, without the clutching feature?
The Schlage ND92 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with Vandlgard clutching, so the outside lever rotates freely instead of resisting when locked. If clutching is not required, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is also a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever lock with a clutching mechanism and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For a Grade 1 lever where the emphasis is impact resistance rather than clutching, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, though it is a passage function with no key.
5) Is the Hager 2580 storeroom lever a substitute for the Schlage ND92?
They are not the same class of lock. The Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Schlage ND92 is Grade 1 and heavy duty, and it is an entrance function with a push/turn button on the inside lever rather than a straight storeroom function. If the opening calls for a keyed storeroom lever at Grade 2, the Hager 2580 covers it; if the spec calls out Grade 1, the ND92 is the one that meets it.
6) Which alternative should I use if the opening needs an electrified lever instead of the mechanical Schlage ND92?
The Schlage ND92 as configured is a mechanical, non-electronic cylindrical lock. For a wired opening, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever rated 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. It is a different chassis and cylinder platform from the ND Series, so keying and trim will not carry across from an ND92 without matching cylinders.
7) For a classroom or utility door, what Grade 1 lever covers a function the Schlage ND92 does not?
The ND92 is an entrance function with a push/turn button inside. For classroom lockdown at Grade 1 from another brand, the Dexter C1000 classroom security lever fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and for a both-levers-fixed utility opening the Dexter C1000 asylum F87 lever covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Within Schlage's own ND range those roles are handled by the ND98 Vandlgard classroom security and ND82 institution functions on the same ANSI 161L door prep.
8) Is the Schlage ND92 handed? I don't know which way my door swings.
Non-handed, so one part number covers a left or right hand door. That matters for a property manager or MRO stockroom keeping spares on the shelf: a single ND92 covers any swing, and you decide handing at install rather than at order.
9) Is the Schlage ND92 a true storeroom function lock?
It is catalogued and specified as a storeroom function, single cylinder keyed lock: outside lever stays rigid, the latchbolt is retracted by the key in the outside lever or by rotating the inside lever, and the inside lever is always free. If what you actually need is a lock where the outside lever can never be left unlocked, look at the ND96 Vandlgard storeroom lock (ANSI F86), where the outside lever is always inoperative and the key only retracts the latch, with no button to leave it unsecured.
10) How tough is the Schlage ND series compared to what Grade 1 actually requires?
The published numbers go well past the minimum: no access at 3,100 in-lb of lever torque (2.6 times BHMA), no access at 1,600 lb of offset lever pull (8 times BHMA, the pry-bar case), and no access after 100 vertical impacts (20 times BHMA, the sledgehammer case). Near-zero droop or wobble past 16 million cycles, with a cast steel spindle, and no set screws or O-rings propping the lever up. Schlage states the ND series exceeds BHMA A156.2 for Grade 1 cylindrical locks. Construction is modular zinc and steel, plated for corrosion protection.
11) Is there a Grade 1 storeroom-function lever from another brand if I don't need Vandlgard?
If the free-spinning outside lever is not a requirement, a lighter option is the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever, a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock fitting 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, or the Cal-Royal AG05, a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are storeroom function like the ND92 but step down from Grade 1. Staying at Grade 1 in a vandal-resistant cylindrical lever, Corbin Russwin's CL3100 Series is a vandal resistant Grade 1 cylindrical lever line for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
12) Can the Schlage ND92 be electrified for access control?
No. The ND92 is a mechanical lock with no electronic option on this configuration. The ND series does offer six wired functions elsewhere in the family, with autodetecting 12-24V DC input, switch-selectable fail safe or fail secure on the chassis, modular request-to-exit rated 3A at 125VAC / 2A at 30VDC, and 0.23 amps maximum with 0.01 amps holding current. If you need a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever from another line, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
13) What is a lighter-duty keyed lever to use instead of the Schlage ND92 on a low-traffic interior office door?
The Schlage ND92 is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial lever. For lower traffic openings, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with an entrance/office function, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Both are keyed cylindrical levers; neither carries the Vandlgard clutching that lets the ND92 outside lever spin freely when locked.
14) If the door does not need to lock at all, what pairs with a Schlage ND92 on adjacent openings?
For non-keyed openings alongside keyed ND92 doors, the Grade 1 options include the Falcon K101 passage cylindrical lock, which is non-handed, fire rated and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Falcon T101 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology. The Design Hardware X75 is another Grade 1 passage lever, built for 1-3/4 inch doors. The ND92 itself is keyed and non-handed, so mixing it with non-handed passage levers avoids handing calls on the order.
15) What looks like an equivalent to the Schlage ND92 but will not work as one?
Dummy trim is the common mix-up. The BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is Grade 1 and heavy duty, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy lever, but a dummy has no chassis, no latch and no cylinder, so it cannot secure an opening. The Schlage ND92 is a keyed single cylinder lock with a deadlatch and a key cylinder in the outside lever. Order dummy trim only for inactive leaves or pulls.
16) Can I use a Yale or Accentra cylinder in a Schlage ND92 less-cylinder lock?
The Schlage ND92 is offered less conventional cylinder as well as with a Schlage full size interchangeable core, and the ND Series supports non-Schlage cylinders including Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale. Going the other direction, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is what you need when the Schlage-keyed cylinder has to go into Yale trim rather than into the ND92.
17) Is a Grade 3 residential entrance lever an acceptable swap for a Schlage ND92 in an apartment building?
They are built for different traffic. The Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. The Schlage ND92 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lock with a keyed cylinder and clutching outside lever. On common-area and corridor doors where abuse is expected, the Grade 1 chassis is the match; Grade 3 levers suit in-unit interior openings.
18) What should I order instead of a Schlage ND92 if the door needs keypad access rather than a key?
The Schlage ND92 is a mechanical keyed lever with a cylinder in the outside lever. For code entry on the same style of opening, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination, passage function, fitting doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. Keypad sets will not key into an existing Schlage master key system the way the ND92 does.
19) What finishes does the Schlage ND series come in, and is there an option for a healthcare corridor?
Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, and 643e aged bronze. For patient rooms and clinical corridors the 626AM antimicrobial satin chrome is the one to specify. Cylinder options on the ND92 are offered in 626 satin chrome.
20) I need a matching dummy lever for the inactive leaf of a pair. What works alongside a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock?
The ND170 single dummy trim and ND172 double dummy trim are the ND series options, fixed lever with no latch or chassis, used as a pull or to match inactive trim. For the ND172, latch cover plates are part number 47269199. If you are matching a different lever family across a building, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever.
