Schlage Lock Company ND series Cylindrical Locks

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified ND series locks. These locks are put through extreme levels of testing and are proven to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque-more than 2-1/2 times the grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock’s superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles. All ND series locks including electronic functions, ligature-resistant trims, and ground-breaking, high-visibility status indication trims use the common cylindrical ANSI 161L door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications where grade 1 strength and security are desired.

1) What does the Schlage ND96 storeroom function actually do, and will people still be able to get out?
The ND96 is a storeroom lock: the outside lever is always fixed, and a key in the outside lever retracts the latchbolt only, it never unlocks the lever. The inside lever is always free, so egress is immediate without a key. It runs a deadlatch, which is what you want on an exterior or secured storeroom door. ANSI function F86.
2) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ND96 and why would I pay for it?
Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely when the lock is locked instead of resisting. Someone hanging on the lever or kicking down on it turns air rather than loading the chassis, so the common abuse failure on a storeroom door is removed. It is the difference between ND96 and the plain ND80 storeroom lock, which is the same F86 function without the clutching lever. For a school corridor, a dorm, or any high-traffic MRO opening, that is the reason to take the 96.
3) Do I have to order a Schlage ND96 handed for a left or right hand door?
No. The ND96 is non-handed, so one lock covers either swing and nobody has to field-determine the hand before it goes on the cart. That matters on a multi-opening order where the doors swing both ways.
4) The ND96 is offered less cylinder. What cylinder do I have to buy separately?
Three cylinder configurations are orderable: J for Schlage full size interchangeable core (FSIC), B for small format interchangeable core (SFIC), and L for less conventional cylinder. All three ship without the core or cylinder, so you supply it. The ND series also accepts less cylinder builds made to fit non-Schlage cylinders from Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale, which is how you keep an existing master key system intact. If you would rather it arrive keyed, the series standard is a 6-pin conventional cylinder in the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway with two keys.
5) What Grade 1 storeroom lever can replace a Schlage ND96 on a heavy-traffic opening?
The Schlage ND96 is a Grade 1 cylindrical storeroom lever with the outside lever always locked and the latchbolt retracted by key outside or by the inside lever. Within the Grade 1 cylindrical lever family, the Dexter C1000 series covers the adjacent keyed functions - the C1000 classroom and the C1000 entry/office are both Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks rated for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The ND96 carries the Vandlgard clutching outside lever, which lets the outside lever rotate freely when locked instead of resisting torque, so if free-spinning lever behavior is what you are matching, stay on the ND96.
6) Is there a lighter-duty storeroom lever than the Schlage ND96 for a low-traffic utility door?
Two Grade 2 storeroom levers cover that opening. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The ND96 is Grade 1 heavy duty with the Vandlgard clutching lever; the two Grade 2 units are conventional storeroom chassis without that feature.
7) The door needs to lock down from inside during a threat - what do I use instead of a storeroom lever?
A storeroom lever like the Schlage ND96 keeps the outside lever locked at all times and cannot be unlocked by anyone in the room.
